RIP character actor George Gaynes, known as Police's Academy's Cmndt. Eric Lassard in the Police Academy series, the father in Punky Brewster, and also General Hospital's original mob boss, Frank Smith who tortured Luke and Laura. He was 98. Variety obit

Gaynes had what was arguably the best line (or best delivered line, anyway) in Tootsie: "Does Jeff know?" He also did a memorable bit part as an arrogant French wine purveyor in one episode of Columbo. He was great. RIP.

I never laid a hand on her!

(I love that his character in Tootsie played a soap star named Dr. Brewster, not only a throwback to his soap opera days but also a throw-forward to his Punky Brewster days.)

A master of that particular form of dignity where even in the most ridiculous situations, you knew that he would simply sigh and move on, and his antagonist would get what was coming to him.

"This is one picture...that was another...I hope you have enjoyed this as much as I have..."

A guy who could play both raunchy and sweet with equal sincerity. RIP.
