"Obviously at some point they were conscious; somebody felt threatened."

Two single parents: Kisha Michael, 31, and Marquintan Sandlin, 32, were unconscious in their car, sitting at a stoplight at 3 am. For forty-five minutes officers attempted to rouse them to "de-escalate the situation". The two parents were then shot dead. "Police have made no comment on what specific threat officers perceived."

First link is the most complete report, with quotes from the mayor. Here's the first report, written scant hours after the incident.

And one more report; says that no police were injured in the encounter. That's not substantiated by any other source, but I imagine that if there were injuries, there would be no reason not to report them.

Officers say that a gun was spotted in Kisha Michael's hand when they approached the car at 3:10 AM. 45 minutes later, police shot into the car and mortally wounded both people. It's not known what chain of events or reasoning led to the shooting.

Kisha Michael had a bench warrant for her arrest; Marquintan Sandlin had a prior conviction for illegal possession of a firearm. But the police presumably didn't know that until they ran the couple's IDs - after their death.

Kisha Michael leaves behind three sons, and Marquintan Sandlin leaves behind four daughters. Families of the deceased say that both were devoted to their children. They had arranged childcare in advance for this rare night out.
