First there was the tumblr, then there was the book, now there’s a Ruth Bader Ginsburg coloring book. It’s not a nominee, but in the meantime.

I'm finding myself having mixed feelings for some reason about having Supreme Court Justices be pop cultural icons while they're still serving on the Court. I suppose I would prefer a different reality--where the Supreme Court really is a neutral, apolitical body--instead of the reality we live in. And, yes, SCOTUS has never actually been exactly neutral and apolitical, but there's still something about this that strikes me as a little funny. So on one hand I enjoy it, and if there was a member of the Court who's going to be celebrated in a benign, popculture hero fashion, I'm happy that it's Ginsburg, but on the other, I at least enjoyed the illusion that SCOTUS is above this sort of pop cultural phenomenon, so this makes me feel a bit weird, too.

I guess what I particularly love about the coloring book is that it does turn someone and something extremely serious—RBG, the Supreme Court, the law of the land—into something that is silly and coded young and feminine. The coloring book feels very My Little Pony or Jem or Barbie—frivolous, childish things, but about a woman who is a true hero to women, and who is deciding literally life and death matters every day. It feels...subversive? Turning something on its head?
