We haven't won this one yet, aliens could still invade and endorse Dole.

Two decades ago, the world wide web was relatively young and quiet. Now it's not a bad idea to buy up domains to prevent others from mis-using them, but back then that sort of online prank was unknown. Brooks Talley and Mark Pace were among the first to register such joke domains, setting up buchanan96.org (now cyber-squatted and blocked from displaying by robots.txt) clinton96.org and dole96.org, not to be confused with dolekemp96.org (previously). 4president.us has more screenshots of the official '96 pages, if you want to peak back at how presidential candidates presented themselves online twenty years ago.

Yes, Archive.org has the .avi video on dole96.org ("our latest television ad"). Does anyone know what movie that is?

(Also, Atlas Obscura's article references Matt Haughey's efforts to replace images of guns with sex toys in photos of GOP politicians)

I remember that bushblows.com sent you to the official George W. Bush campaign site. It was funny and a little bit ironic.

Not derail even further with the derail I started, but I just realized I've been derailing conversations on the Internet by injecting Simpsons quotes for at least 20 years now.

We are simply exchanging long protein strings. If you know of a better way, I'd like to hear it!

Twenty years ago I made sure i was as an invisible presence as possible on the www. At the time people thought that was weird. Then everybody got on the web and I maintained as much invisibility as possible (though Facebook probably knows who I am since I have found out my wife tags me in her photos). Now, we've all started to realize that we don't want everyone to know who we are... And maybe my decision wasn't/ isn't totally crazy.

Wasn't dole.com also a joke site? I vaguely remember my middle school librarian showing me a page with lots of fruit-themed logos and taking great delight in the deliberate confusion of domain names.

I have yet to peak as of today so I must decline the invitation to peak back. But these links look fun!

Dole.com was owned by Dole Food Company back in April 1997, which is the oldest record on Archive.org.

Bob Dole doesn't know what BobDole.com is. Bob Dole is confused about Bob Dole.com. Bob Dole don't know what the Internet is, and Bob Dole doesn't care to find out.

twenty years ago

Can't get over this :/ :/

Also, all those sites look the way things are supposed to look. And you could run them on a dial-up modem.

More recent squatting shenanigans

(JebBush.com redirected to Trump's site until lately. No more, unfunnily.)
