hehe the picture heading up the Brazil fieldsite is taken 50m down the street from where I have my café and açai every morning looking at the hill from the asphalt.

I have come to the wall of hands, far back inside the cave. The priest has mixed charcoal, antelope blood, and water in a shallow bowl. He gives me the reed. I find an open place on the wall, then load my reed with some of the mix from the priest's bowl. I put my hand to the wall, the priest begins his chant. I put the end of the reed into my mouth and spray my hand. When I take my hand down it is revealed that I was here. The antelope is here. This is my story.

I'm just starting to dig into what they've pulled together and I love it, I'm so excited about this.

Social media is not making the world more homogenous.

This was the first one I clicked on, and for a moment I thought that the way they had phrased this statement implied that they saw this discovery as an overall bad thing.

I was relieved and rather impressed that this was not the case. They let each story stand for itself and let you think about each story within its own context and refrained from writing their own opinion at the end. They just let you consider them as a group on your own, and left it at that. With no concluding statement presenting their opinion of whether this is good or bad, it's just a collection of 'here's what we have found' and the only thing the site seems to expect is that you take a moment and think about it.

I really like the way they did that, and I'm actually surprised how refreshing that feels and how much it makes me want to dive through everything they have.

I've just been pouting because they left out any mention of the entire continent of Africa.

I note that this was funded by an ERC grant. As someone who will be expected to apply for EU research monies (well, assuming the Brexit doesn't happen), I'm bookmarking this as an example of what counts as 'worthy of funding' to the ERC folks...
