Who doesn't hate telemarketers? The US Federal Trade Commision is considering making changes to the Telemarketing Sales Rule to include a national "do not call" registry, making it illegal for most telemarketers to call you if you've placed your name and number on the list. The FTC is looking for public comments, and the deadline is March 29, 2002, so if you support or oppose this measure, the time to act is now!

We already have that in the UK... the Telephone Preference Service and the Mail Preference Service. It's free to sign up and then companies have a mandatory eight weeks to take you off their books. If you get called by one you can report them and they receive a £500 fine. Three strikes and they lose their telesales licence.
I worked in telesales for a while and actually quite enjoyed cold-calling people and really pissing them off. But then, I'm a git. :)
