The Economist recently completed a survey of Gulf countries. Much of the content is 'premium access only' or available in the print version. This article, subtitled "The Gulf states have come a long way, fast. Now they need to think about where they are going" is online and examines the swift changes in economy, institutions, and population trends in this in-the-spotlight region. Some fascinating stuff.

i was watching cnn last night, ashleigh banfield was in beirut and was talking about how much it's changed over the last decade, kinda like new york :) it reminded me of a couple articles:

• BEIRUT: Rebuilding the city's shattered reputation
• Building a New Beirut

i know it's not in the gulf, but i think what they've gone through (and left behind!) makes a great case study for cities going through the kind of change dubai is going through.

btw, here're a couple on yemen :) it's incredible some of the challenges states face undergoing modernization/development/or whatever. fascinating stuff!
