Skittgubbe is also known as "The Game That Cannot Be Learned by Observation."

Odd for me to see this pop up here, as I'm one of the original UCLA Skittgubbe players. When the earlier thread about medieval card games popped up I looked to see if Skittgubbe was represented. Sadly, it was not.

We're all scattered to the four winds at this point, but at our annual Skittgubbe get-together this year, Matthew Merzbacher introduced another variant rule (apparently originating with Adger): Anti-Trump. The suit opposite the trump suit (e.g., Hearts if the trump suit is Diamonds) cannot be trumped.

This sounds like a version of Mas (it's without the goat part). It translates loosely as Old Man, I guess, which is probably where the name "Skitgubbe" (old dirty man) comes from.

My family plays this at every vacation stop, and have since the late 70:s. Whoever loses (only one game played per location) is the Mas for that particular location. The log book from our old boat faithfully records who was the Mas at a particular location - for every night at harbor on every trip for a decade plus. My mom's daily notes do the same with every location where the entire family has ever been together. This is serious stuff...
