I was so scared I would shit myself while the client was thrusting

This post was deleted for the following reason: This is a totally okay thing to post but this is, in fact, kinda poor judgement for what to use as the title text and is undercutting the conversation as a result. Maybe try again tomorrow with more of a tell rather than show approach to "awful stuff inside" and let folks decide whether or not to click through. -- cortex

Maybe too explicitly stated for the front page? Was not in the mood to read that. : /

Other peoples' realities are a drag, eh?

I appreciated the matter-of-factness of the writing. The last couple paragraphs are key.
And criminalized sex workers who can access the treatment then have to worry about that horrendously more painful detox from a long-acting opioid like methadone or Suboxone they’ll suffer in jail, should they be arrested—since MAT is not offered in the vast majority of US prisons and lockups.

MAT also does nothing to address the power and class imbalance between marginalized opioid-using sex workers and their clients. As drug users and sex workers have been saying for decades, the only way for us to begin to ameliorate conditions for both groups is to end the War on Drugs and decriminalize prostitution. Only then can we also address the unique vulnerability of those who belong to both stigmatized populations.

Absolutely not too explicit for the front page. This is people's lives, their real un-sanitzed lives, and the title makes it very obvious what you'll click on.

If you're not "in the mood" maybe you should consider that none of these people were probably in the mood either but did what they had to in order to survive.

the first part felt like it was heading for an anti sex-work treatise but leveled out to a really matter of fact end. I was expecting this to be a much different read.

thanks for posting. hard to finish but worth it.

I mean, yeah? That's sort of the point of this article, isn't it? This is an awful experience, and as human being endowed with empathy, reading about it and contemplating it makes us feel bad. That doesn't mean we don't think it's valuable to do, but not all of us are always in a good mental state to handle that kind of negative emotion. I think it's a valuable story to share as an FPP, but I see where Glinn is coming from in that including a particularly violent and sexually explicit line from the article as the FPP title kind of robs people of the choice to assess whether they're prepared to engage with that material. Since you don't know what's going on in everyone one Metafilter's lives right now, it's pretty crappy to smugly judge them for not wanting to have that line shoved in their face.

I'm fine today but in some of my worse bouts of depression/anxiety this would have been more than I could handle. I can easily imagine there are others on Metafilter for whom this hits too close to home, and this title would be very upsetting regardless of how they're doing on any particular day.

Can we take the meTa discussion to meTa, if it needs to happen?

It's an important story, but I think people are being a little rude about the politely worded suggestion that the quote is a bit much for the front page. Plenty of things are a part of people's realities that MeFites did not sign up to see. Would an image of the addict shitting herself during sex also be a reality that the sheeple needed to face up to when they innocently clicked to the site over their morning coffee? An autoplaying video? And if we must face these realities in all their sordidness whether we've asked for it or not, to what avail? Is it a kind of test of one's fortitude? It certainly doesn't do anything to help the addict. Her life is the same whether we read her story or not. Why then is it so important that absolutely everyone confront this?
