Unfortunately for Tormund both Jamie and Brienne are on their way to Riverrun. Nice guys finish last.

I don't even go here, but this is the most delightful thing that I've seen all week.

My favorite part of the first meeting of the pair, is how Brienne reaches for her sword.

I've said it on Fanfare and I'll say it again. Of course Tormund's got the bug (as did Jaime before him) but my girl B-oh-T don't have no time for no D.

I want this series to end with Brienne riding off into the sunset leaving a string of awed and shattered hearts behind her.

But seriously Brienne and Tormund could never actually work because he's a murderer (and likely rapist) and I can't see him having a redemption arc that would fix that enough for Brienne to be able to overlook it.

shhhhhh you're ruining the dream

Agreed, I totally get that they would never get together but as a big fan of Kristofer Hivju (and Gwendoline Christie!), I was really holding out that they'd make it to Ygritte's secret rock hot tub of love North of the wall together.

But I guess that would be all messed over with White walkers now, so less romantic.

But it is Tormund and Brienne, so maybe slaying a bunch of White walkers first would be more romantic.

(and likely rapist)

I'm sceptical of this because they've proven themselves to be doctrinaire libertarians who are all about agency at absurd material costs, not participants in a strongman culture. But who knows what D&D have planned?

Would absolutely recommend the movie Firce Majeure for an opportunity to see Tormund in a contemporary setting with the exact same beard.

First, Tormund was the one who schooled Jon Snow about being a caring lover. Second, Tormund is clearly Brienne's MPDG and I will fight you.

Adding to the pile that Tormund also gets to give Jon Snow the best backhanded compliments. (*swoon*)

And finish in mid-season.

Tormund's been doing hotel commercials with that awesome beard too. And he's so happy in them!

So I think this dynamic is funny, but has anybody noticed that Brienne just...doesn't seem into it? Pretty boys like Renly and Jaime appear to be more her speed.

Tormund just needs a shave and a hot shower.

hot shower, sure - but why do he need shave?

She's totally not into it. She even complained about him to Sansa. Will she come around, or will she continue to crush on worthless pretty boys? Only time will tell!

For him, shaving would show real courage. And it would probably really make an impression on Brienne.

I hadn't thought of it, but that's a possible direction...

I recently stayed at one of those hotels. They had a life-size (well, maybe less-than-life-sized, since it was the size of a normal person) cardboard stand-up of Kristofer Hivju in a spiffy blue suit, and it was unattended for a while; part of me will never forgive myself for not doing the wrong thing.

I'm just going to say this: You should have done the wrong thing, and you should feel bad for not doing the wrong thing, for all of us who never had the opportunity.

Regarding shaved HivjuTormund: He's certainly not using his beard to hide a weak chin or anything.
posted by Harald74 at 11:54 PM on May 30, 2016 [5 favorites]

It actually kind of bothered me how she's so clearly not into it at all and yet there was stuff all over the internet about what a great couple they make and how they need to get together. Like the man looks at you like that and that's it, you have to just fall at his feet and let him have his way regardless of your own thoughts on the matter.

That chin is positively Gastonesque!

I think the appeal is that Brienne's only been interested in jerks and Tormund is the first dude who seems to actually appreciate her for her. Like, you want to see your favorite characters with people who would treat them well, and the if the other person is a favorite character than all's the better. Plus they would make giant babies.

I haven't heard anything along the lines of "oh man, she better appreciate him or she's an ungrateful shallow bitch just like all women." It's all significantly more wistful and lighthearted than that.

The fact that she didn't do this is key to this story, too. If she had, it wouldn't be nearly as charming.

Aw geez, that better not be a spoiler. I at least want to see Jaime realize that he should've put a ring on it because he's got some formidable competition.

I guess I don't see anything wistful, lighthearted, or charming about a women who is clearly made uncomfortable by and not interested in persistent attention from a man.

a women who is clearly made uncomfortable by and not interested in persistent attention from a man.

Ordinarily I'd agree with this. However, I don't see what's been going on between Tormund and Brienne as that kind of situation. I think Brienne has a hard time believing a man would be attracted to her and attracted to her so fiercely. Her being a virgin likely adds an extra complication. Maybe she'll come around and maybe she won't but I still think it would be great for her to be with someone who truly wants her, is in awe of her, and wouldn't regard getting with her as an act of charity. But of course the feelings need to be mutual and it's far from there...yet.

Also all he's done so far is gaze at her longingly, and she could crush his windpipe. So it doesn't come across as particularly coercive.

Side note, I would totally watch a 90s-style rom-com with these two actors ... maybe Tormund is a reclusive lumberjack and Brienne is the badass first female park policewoman in the remote reserve and they're brought together by illegal poachers or something and Tormund takes to haunting the local Tim Horton's in the hopes of getting her attention when she picks up her morning Timbits ... I would watch the shit out of this movie.

Nah. Invert the trope entirely. He's a twit playing at woodsman and gets lost, she leads the search to find him.

I'm developing headcanon wherein maybe Brienne thinks that Tormund looks at everyone (or, at least, every woman) that way. So she's kind but dismissive of him because she assumes that he's developmentally disabled or something. Kind of like how she sums up Jon Snow as "a bit brooding."

Also, considering her family and professional background, he must seem totally uncivilized and barely human. It will take some doing for her to see him as a complete person, perhaps.

... But not long for her to see him as a

Which is enough.

I think given Brienne's experiences with people who share her family and professional background, she's likely to be more open to the idea that you don't have to be noble to be worthy.

Can't you recognise a meet cute when it's staring you in the face?

Brienne is off to the Riverlands, where she will presumably have more pressing matters than 'that wildling fellow with the beard' to worry about, so obviously Briemund won't get a chance to Sam and Diane. But it was a fun chance to see what a dedicated fandom can make out of two or three quick shots.
posted by Soulfather at 2:51 PM on May 31, 2016 [1 favorite]

On the one hand, yeah, it kind of sucks that the guy who seems well suited towards Brienne isn't someone she's into.

On the other hand, so far she's been into pretty boys who are gay or rapey-incestuous-y. *sigh*
