A Clockwork Yellow

19-year old French film student Candice Drouet compiled all the Stanley Kubrick references in The Simpsons alongside their original counterpart and captured 25 years of visual references in two minutes. Her visual project, 1.000.000 Frames (100 videos) collects images from all the movies she seen in her life, split into different themes such as loneliness, the sounds of Wes Anderson, and addictions. Much more at Vimeo.

Beautiful stuff, thanks for this. Interesting commentary on the changing role of film... the ability to see such curated collections of moments is fascinating in several ways. We din't used to be able to do this.

I guess it's a testament to how etensively the Simpsons references Kubrick that Drouet had to leave out so many other scenes like Bart reaching for the cupcakes.

the cupcake scene is actually the first Kubrick reference I think of for the Simpsons. Wonder if he missed it? It's fairly oblique, unlike many of the ones shown here which were more straightforward homage. It's also a less iconic scene, compared to say, the Ludovico treatment, Slim Pickens riding the bomb, etc.

I stopped watching the Simpsons at around season 10, so I've never seen some of these episodes. The Eyes Wide Shut scene definitely looked new to me.

Not sure what this makes me want to do more, watch old Kubrick movies or watch old Simpsons episodes.

I wonder if the cupcake scene wasn't included because of nudity issues.

Her visual project, 1.000.000 Frames (100 videos)

Warning: The 1.000.000 Frames video might be the type of film to induce seizures for those with that medical/health condition. I do not have issues with this, but even I felt a bit nauseous after just a few seconds of watching.

It also seems like cheating to include "The Shinning" since it's a direct parody of the movie and "A Clockwork Yellow" since it's explicitly a Kubrick pastiche/homage.

I'd have liked to see more of the little references sprinkled throughout the show like the Patton one, Homer riding the bomb, Lisa's comment on Bart's prayer, etc.

[Pushes up glasses]

Actually, I would not have included the explicit parodies as they are quite distinct from references, and plus as everyone knows, nothing after Season Ten matters, and I am being quite generous with that. Also, no cupcakes? Boy, I really hope someone got fired for that blunder.

[Glasses slide back down]

PS: Hee! I never caught the one with Mr. Burns being fed the Spanish peanut ("Skin?") and Alex in the hospital bed!
