Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is a great movie about a terrible human being "He’s like Tom Sawyer tricking people into whitewashing the fence — only in this case, the fence is your time, your money, your moral code, and sometimes even your physical safety." (Tanya Pai, Vox) Previously: They think he's a righteous dude.

Clearly, Ferris is far from the most talented or interesting person in the scene — he's not even really singing, or doing much of anything besides holding a microphone. Yet he manages to create something bigger and more important than himself, to unlock some hidden thing in the people around him, whether it’s sick dance moves or a questionable singing voice or just a pure feeling of joy.

I mean, if you think that scene is literally happening in the plot of the movie, and fail to recognize that it's taking place inside Ferris's narcissistic fantasy life, sure.

I'm going to start the backlash against the Ferris backlash which is on trend these days. I'm in with Ferris.

I still think he's a righteous dude and these supposed terrible things he does aren't that bad. I don't buy that he is a narcissist given his genuine concern for Cameron.

I'm not even sure that Ferris is supposed to change at the end of the movie as a classic protagonist. I think the transformation, as others have pointed out, is in Cameron whom it could be said is the actual protagonist. Maybe Ferris is the male equivalent of whatever evolved into manic pixie dream girl.

Anyway, I grew up in this area of Chicago suburbs in this time (friends and girlfriends are in most of the Hughes movies) and every location is a part of my soul and my own young life so maybe that helps.

And from two weeks ago: SAVE JEANIE.

I look forward to next month's post: "Oh Yeah? A Critical Take on Yello"
