I haven't seen either series yet. I happened upon this interview, and thought Kim Cattrall was wonderful. ~ 25 mins.

I have a fond memory of the time I happened to catch an interview between Kim Cattrall and Ben Mulroney on TV. Ben Mulroney has pretty much zero ability to conduct a good interview -- he's so vapid he brings nothing to the table, and his guests are usually clearly just suffering through the whole experience -- and I ordinarily would never watch him but was channel surfing and thought it was worth while to pause long enough to see what Cattrall had to say, because I find her intelligent and interesting and very forthright about it. She gave him kind of a hard time, which was very enjoyable. He tried to reference her being "of a certain age" in a very awkward, inept way, and she said, "I'm in my fifties. You can say it," and she then talked about the decreased opportunities for older actresses and volunteered some thoughts on how the cruelty of people's comments about aging actors stemmed from their being reminded of their own mortality. This is basically how the interview went -- the best moments were moments she said something of her own accord, because Ben never asked her any interesting questions. At the end she got in a dig about his father. I then congratulated myself on having paused on that channel.

I'd say her resume as an actress consists of a lot of guilty pleasures for me, but I don't believe in guilty pleasures. I really, genuinely, without shame, enjoy Porky's, Police Academy, and Mannequin, and I think everybody loves Big Trouble. She's not a showy actress, but she somehow always manages to be exactly right for every role she appears in, even when they are very different, which shows genuine, if unflashy, talent. If attractive actresses were respected in the same way as craggy actors, she'd be recognized as a very skilled character actress, and her skill would what she is celebrated for, rather than her attractiveness, and there would still be plenty of work for her.

And there is a long list of actresses I could say this about.

(Anyone else have Claudia O'doherty's Kim Catrall impression from CBB in their head now?)

Yeah, me too. I mean I only watched a few episodes of SATC, but I was looking for stuff to watch, and saw this interview among many. I was interested in the question of how someone so closely identified with a certain kind of sexuality might face the question of aging. Looks like, she takes it on.

I liked what she said about wanting to show what it is to be a middle-aged woman considering her neck in a mirror, and to frame that moment as something beautiful, instead of turning her into a joke or caricature. I'm interested in seeing how she did it, will check out this show.

At the end she got in a dig about his father.

Heh. Considering that Cattrall had been romantically linked to Pierre Trudeau, I hope she got in less a dig and more like a good satisfying knife-twisting. (God I hate the Mulroneys.)

I love Kim Cattrall in everything she's in, and the thing I love about her most is that she always looks like she's having so much fun, no matter what she's doing or who she's talking to. Maybe she's just terrific at pretending she's a blast to hang out with, but I'm betting she's just a riot.

There's an episode of Who Do You Think You Are? about her family and it's fascinating. I think she ended up having secret cousins in Australia that nobody knew anything about.

Also: "Don't worry, it's only me, Gracie Law!"

Not that we NEED an American version of Miss Fisher's Mysteries, but it occurs to me that Cattrall would make a great American Phryne Fisher.
