This year's BBC Reith Lectures are on a Question of Trust. Beginning today at 8pm GMT on Radio 4, the first lecture by Prof. Onora O'Neill examines the importance of trust in society and how levels of suspicion are increasing. The full text and audio of the lectures will be made available online after they are broadcast, and judging by previous years lectures (on The End of Age and Respect for the Earth), these will be well worth listening to.

Thanks, adrianhon! I've only read Reith lectures but, in an hour or so, I shall be listening to one. I hope your generosity in warning us beforehand, before the texts are availanle, doesn't doom the thread.

Actually, American trust in government has gone up since 9/11. Of course, this now puts it somewhere around 52%, but it's a lot better than the low 30s it had been in for years before. I hope O'Neill discusses the 9/11 effect.

She's now going on about how newspaper journalists are the least trusted of all, far below television presenters. She has a wonderful, deep voice you can...trust. Aaron: you really are an Anglophile, bless you. I don't think she'll be addressing the 9/11 effect; though that would be obvious. She seems to be playing the audience for jokes. Listen in, it's worth it. Needs Real Audio and some patience.
