He's peaking at ~100 dB. That's about motorcycle levels (albeit more intermittent.)

Of COURSE he is a tuxedo. This was posted by the foster mother to one of my cats. Make sure to read her caption.

My cats are affronted that I'm listening to some other cat purring on the internet. I feel like I've been caught watching porn, or something.

This makes me want to go home and squeeze some good purrs out of my kitties.

Wanted to come in hot and dispute this, but that is some quality purrage. We used to have a beautiful white and ginger cat, the notional runt of the litter, who was big-built but pigeon-chested and he would purr like nobody's business. Much missed, obvs. Similarly, Merlin seems like a (noisy) delight!

I love cats. They're like people, but marginally more amenable to stroking.

My big black cat is a loud purrer. We call him a two-stroke engine - that's about how many pets it takes to get him revving. <3

I played this and all three of my cats stopped what they were doing and stared at my laptop, mesmerized.

Well, my cat has the quietest purr. You have to put your ear right up to her face to even know she's doing it.

The late Kitty Michaels had a very loud motorboat purr abs his spiritual niece BB Michael's (they're both black cats you see) is similarly loud. Toby Michaels, on the other hand, makes a sound that is more like a wheeze than a purr. The Moose (our large tabby) has a totally normal purr that is none the less very rewarding. All three living cats in our house agree that Merlin is loud enough to warrant some attention.

I'm pretty sure a motorcycle is 100dB (SPL) from, like, five feet away, rather than an inch. But yeah that's a pretty loud cat.

My cat is 10 kilograms of muscle and you can barely hear his purr with your ear on his chest.
My old roommate's cat was probably 1 kilogram soaking wet and she could deafen you with her mighty purrs.
There must be some information in here about sound absorption by catbodies.

Yorvit (quiet purrer) was like WTF is that why do you have a cat in your laptop.

Roswell (loud purrer) continued to wash his face and paid no attention.

Photos from their kittenhood because I happened to have those tabs open from when mrzarquon mentioned them recently.

One of my childhood cats was named Merlin. One of my current cats looks very similar to the loud-purring Merlin. I'm having trouble squaring this information, but I think it means that lady has my cat.

our cat purs so quietly that you usually can't hear it even with your ear to his body. but you can feel a sight vibration and if we go away, when we come back, he'll deign to do an audible (barely) purr for a few days.

I really needed this in my life today, so thank you.

Also Merlin should go hang out with Alawa, the lazy howling wolf a few posts down. They'd make a nice ensemble.

Mrs Westwood, a tarot card reader from Torquay, Devon

Of course she is. None more Torquay than a tarot card reader with a cat called Merlin.

One of our cats is unable to purr. He can only grunt. I didn't know that was possible until I saw it for myself.
