I owe Dan Gillmor an apology, dammit. On April 1st, I blogged here at MeFi this story about Stanford filing an IPO as an example of a rather lame April Fool's joke. Well, it turned out to be a little closer to the truth than I thought.

No you don't.

I don't have any problem with the University, as a private organization, owning an equity interest in a company commercializing work done there.

The idea of *the college being owned*, which is what the original story suggested, is entirely another matter.

And, FWIW, I think it was a pretty decent AFJ... it was *just* credible enough to make you go hmmm... as the saying goes.

For the record, Gillmor replied to my semi-serious apology e-mail: "Came as a surprise to me, too..."
