Rogue One: A Star Wars Story - Celebration Reel [YouTube] Go behind the scenes with the cast and crew of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

- What we learned from the Rogue One panel at Star Wars Celebration Europe [The Guardian]
Gwendoline Christie may not have got much screen time in The Force Awakens as menacing stormtrooper boss Captain Phasma, but she’s already a cult favourite with Star Wars fans. So who better to hype up the crowd at Star Wars Celebration Europe than the Game of Thrones star herself? In the end it was a pretty impressive turnout for Friday’s panel, with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy joining castmembers Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Alan Tudyk, Mads Mikkelsen, Forest Whitaker and Ben Mendehlson on stage. Here’s what we learned about the first ever standalone Star Wars movie.
○ Gareth Edwards’ debut in the hot seat still looks like a dark war movie.
○ Jedis may be out, but freaky aliens are very much in.
○ Disney doesn’t fancy another row over action figure diversity.
○ Diego Luna’s Cassian and Alan Tudyk’s K2SO are space buddies.
○The Darth Vader tease remains very much in place.

- Mark Hamill says Episode VIII lines will make fans 'forget all about May the Force be with you'. [Entertainment Weekly]
“I was looping Episode VIII yesterday, and there’s dialogue in there, and I thought, ‘Oh boy, I can already see this on a T-shirt. Rian Johnson is amazing,” he said of the next installment’s writer-director. “He’ll make you forget all about ‘May the Force be with you.’ He’s come up with so many new catchphrases.”

- Who Is Grand Admiral Thrawn and Why Is His Appearance in Star Wars Rebels So Exciting? [io9]
Biographically, Grand Admiral Thrawn is a male Chiss—a species with a humanoid build, light blue skin, dark blue hair, and glowing red eyes. The Chiss come from the “Unknown Regions,” a.k.a. the part of the Star Wars galaxy unexplored by the Republic/Empire. His real name is Mitth’raw’nuruodo, which is a mouthful so his core name is the name everyone knows: Thrawn.

In the old Expanded Universe—Star Wars Legends now—Thrawn was a talented Chiss commander whose tactics led to his people exiling him to the edges of their space. Which, ironically, brought him closer to the Empire and ended with Thrawn leaving the Chiss Expansionary Defense Force for the Imperial Navy. His skill allowed him to rocket to the top of the hierarchy there, even with the Empire’s anti-alien stance.

As much as I loved that celebration reel for Rogue One. I was more excited about the trailer for Season 3 of Star Wars Rebels. Grown up Ezra looks so cool?!! I'm excited to see the ways in which he will be tempted by the Dark Side. And Thrawn!?! FUCKING THRAWN?!! Timothy Zahn has officially made his expanded universe a part of the Star Wars canon. I love that Disney has embraced parts of the expanded universe. I love that they're branching out.

I'm all hyped for Rogue One and Star Wars Rebels, but I'm not at all looking forward to the Han Solo spin-off film. I have a sinking feeling in my stomach that the film will be a massive let down.

UGH GRITTY WAR FILM!STAR WARS YESSSSS

*insert Stephen Colbert give it to me now gif*

Was initially super bummed re: Han Solo casting to the point that I stomped around my house for a bit. Then I YouTubed the new kid and heard him talk and was like, yeah, alright, I'll give you a chance. But I'm still sad that Taron Egerton or Jamie Costa didn't get the role.

But! Thrawn!!!

A+

Chiss are amazing

So very sad I can't renew my SWTOR subscription right now because I bet Chiss agents are gonna be everywhere now

Yes but will it make me forget "from my point of view, the jedi are evil"?

And Thrawn!?! FUCKING THRAWN?!! Timothy Zahn has officially made his expanded universe a part of the Star Wars canon.

The Zahn Heir To The Empire series was utterly thrilling to me when I read them in the early 90s. The first book especially, with the way it was written, felt EXACTLY like reading a Star Wars movie.

I don't know how I feel about this character appearing in this particular movie, but seriously, those three books... If you haven't read them, and you like SW, they are totally worth the time. It's the only part of the Extended Universe that I've found engaging. (I tried some of the comics and other novels, didn't find them nearly as compelling as those three books.)

Who would have thought that 2016 would be a good year to be a fan of Star Wars? Its a good thing, since 2016 is shaping up to be a pretty shitty year to be anything else.

Technically it already happened ages ago, when George Lucas decided to use the galactic capital that Timothy Zahn wrote into his books - Coruscant originated from Zahn's books, it was never mentioned in the first movies.

I am more excited by Rebels than any of the movies to be honest. (Even if the Han Solo² film is being directed by the lego movies guys)

Rebels is so good. I like that theye were given a disney kids star wars brief and have turned it into a serious bit of star wars (with the possible exception of mary poppinsing inquisitor lightsabers)

Is Star Wars Rebels available to stream somewhere for non-cable subscribers?

Watch DisneyXD's website, sometimes they will crack open all the seasons of Rebels for free streaming. There may be a few available now, but my work has some weird thing with a filter which bungles any Disney related website. Alternatively, Rebels can be purchased from most streaming services, like iTunes, Amazon, and so on. Last year a bit of a controversy arose as someone made the decision to break Season Two up into two parts, requiring buying the second half after one already thought they'd paid for the whole season. Additionally, so far, Rebels will release a two episode stand alone special, essentially the first two episodes of the season, ahead of the rest of the season. It's sold separately. For the best deal on buying Rebels, it's always best to buy the blu-ray set, which includes those first two episodes. Note: I have ignored this advice every time...I regret nothing.

I was at the gym, watching the live stream when Thrawn was revealed. I'm sure other people in the area either thought I was mad or having an epileptic seizure, from my response to the news. Rumors earlier this year claimed that Thrawn would be appearing, but until then, they were just that, rumors. Heir to the Empire was one of the things responsible for setting off my Star Wars obsessiveness that continues to this day. I actually expect Thrawn to kick some major rebel butt with an Empire ending for the season - perhaps resulting him being sent to the Unknown Regions (or if he fails, being punished by the same), setting him up potentially for something similar to the old EU. It gets a little more cagey with how the new EU is unfolding (see Aftermath Trilogy), though.

Also, Thrawn, a novel by Timothy Zahn will be released next April.

Given that Rogue One didn't have a full trailer available and that Episode VIII didn't announce it's final title, Rebels completely stole the show with their Thrawn bomb. Season 3 is also simply shaping up to be more riveting with Ezra's advancement and potential seduction to the Dark Side a la Darth Maul. We're also looking more into Sabine's past, which promises to be exciting...cause, well, Mandalorians!

The one thing I missed and I'm dying to find, is Anthony Daniels reading the C-3PO stand alone comic. Argh. They need to put that online!

Although I liked Rebels it was despite the too-campiness it started out with.

Now the CGI Star Wars, Clone Wars? That got epic. I still am surprised it was marketted at kids with the very adult themes, the machinations, the actual deaths. I know some kid's cartoons can be enjoyed by adults ... SW:tCW just surprised me in that I think that especially later seasons were so mature in their content, what with the Iraqi occupation/freedom fighter/terrorist motifs, the asking of hard questions ...

It actually impressed me.

Then again, SW Episode 1-3 also had quite the commentary on the Gulf Wars ('So this is how democracy dies: to thunderous applaus'). Despite the shortcomings (which really to my only apply to the horrid love story and the way Anakin's fall could have been done SO much better), I do think SW 1-3 had quite a few interesting ideas and thrilling scenes. Red Letter Media's reviews were spot on, of course.

And on-topic: Rogue One looks great. However it turns out, though, I'm still sad it got the reshoots for 'tone' to make it 'more Star Wars-y'. I think a gritty war movie would have been excelent to see, and would have been a great addition in the SW realm, especially since they're doing so many films in the universe now; diversity is necessary.

MacD, I actually think that Star Wars Rebels has done a good job of evolving as a show. It certainly did have a bit of campiness but that worked very well with how young Ezra is. I love that both Ezra and Kanan have grown as Jedi and Padawan. Both of them doubting themselves and having to come to grips with their training and their larger place within the Force. I think this season will be the best yet.

While I don't think it'll happen, I would love for Ezra to fully embrace the Dark Side. It would be such a wonderful kind of twist, to see him fall and become a Sith apprentice. Though what will likely happen is that Ezra will be tempted for a few episodes, only to realize how much the Force has to really offer, maybe at the expense of Kanan.

Would those contents be artistic artefacts through which I can divine the essence of your military strategy, because my human name is Mary Sue?

Because I'm sorry, but the holds of our EU fleet are at capacity with crates full of magic lizards that resist the Force.

That, and countless shipping containers of pure fanfic-grade bullshit.

Though what will likely happen is that Ezra will be tempted for a few episodes, only to realize how much the Force has to really offer, maybe at the expense of Kanan.

Best case scenario for Ezra, given his trajectory so far, will be to reject the idea of becoming a true Jedi, like Kanan. I plan to write up potential elements of Season 3 based off of the trailer, but it definitely appears they are introducing a middle way, where one can rely upon the Dark Side and the Light Side of the Force. It's also extremely perilous. Most recently, this was drawn upon in the novel Dark Disciple, in which a Jedi Master opted to learn the Dark Side of the Force, never contemplating that he could be completely seduced....but ends up completely seduced by it.

One of the refrains that Dave Filoni goes back to a lot, especially when speaking of Ahsoka Tano, is the literalness of Yoda's words to Luke, that upon his passing, Luke will be the last Jedi. As time has passed, it seems like Lucasfilm is edging toward a very specific understanding of what a Jedi is and what the Jedi believes in, which isn't just simply using the Light Side of the Force. Kanan, unless he alters who he is at the moment, could definitely be killed or something to that effect. Something or someone will have to alter who he is in a way that makes him no longer meet Yoda's definition of a Jedi, or, more bluntly, he will have to die. Ezra, meanwhile, appears to be going down a path that will lead him away from the strict teachings of the Jedi, so he may live, but he will not become one of the Order.

@Fizz: a dark fully Ezra ... now that would be cool. But we all know Disney won't go THAT far :)

(although, seeing how ...grey ... tCW went ...)

@Atreides : Well, Ahsoka went neutral. Her grey lightsabers (and creator's commentary) say there is a middle path. And let's be honest: the Jedi as portrayed in SW 1-3 are not really something you want to aspire to. As neither are the Sith.

Considering the whole 'Anakin will bring balance to the force': at the start of SW 1, the balance was disturbed: it was all Jedi. At the end of SW3, it became all Dark side. And in the end, the Jedi were dead (including Kenobi), and Anakin/Darth Vader brought balance to the force by killing the Emperor. Only Luke remained, and he bugged out: No Jedi, no Dark Force users ... that's balance, too :)

So now the Force Awakens; it's a primeval force ... it's like science in the respect that it is not inherently evil or good, but becomes how it is used. So Luke, having seen the whole process, might have come to that conclusion: 'Jedi', and all the training it entails, is no good: hell, it brought about the Clone Wars.

So he might be the last of the Jedi. But the next round of Force users? Well, they might not be Jedi, they might not be educated in that strange celibate Ivory Tower. They're something different entirely.
posted by MacD at 6:10 PM on July 19, 2016

I think with Luke, given his experiences with Obi-Wan and Yoda, would probably hold the original Jedi in great esteem, at least leading forward from Return of the Jedi. We know that he established an academy and as far as we know, so far, it was doing fine until Snoke turned Ben Solo and the Knights of Ren wrecked the place. The fact that Luke then left on what amounts to a quest to discover the original beginnings of the Jedi Order does imply, I think, that he must have either concluded what happened was his fault as a lack of knowledge or perhaps over the thousands of years, the Jedi had taken a wrong turn somewhere. I think we will learn a lot about that in December, 2017.
