I hope someone gave him a signed baseball after that.

I was that kid. Now I'm the uncle to that kid. Hopefully, I'll soon enough be the father to that kid.

Thanks to my daughter having the poor luck to come home from the hospital during the All Star Break, this was the first game we watched together, although we were disappointed in the outcome. She mostly slept, while I explained that her wet diaper could wait until after Harper's at bat and how it makes daddy crazy when people swing 3-0.

I had the game on for all 18 innings. I was cooking dinner and some other stuff also so I wasn't staring at the TV the entire time, but I was paying attention.

5 hours 48 minutes according to the box score, if you were wondering.

Anyone who had the game on for all 18 innings deserves a signed baseball. First Bucco game I ever went to was an 18-inning one against the Astros in 2006 at PNC Park. Pirates won. It was after midnight. I felt like that little boy.

Long games are great. The Pierogies run a second race around the field.

The Nats also did kids run the bases yesterday, so some kids stayed the whole two games worth of baseball to get their chance. I feel like they should get something special.

I would have, but I was stuck going to a family function. I checked my phone expecting the Pirates to have blown their lead, which they did, but not expecting I'd be watching a few more hours of baseball when I got back home.

When my brother was maybe 9 and I was home from college for the summer, I scored free tickets to a baseball game from my employers who had been gifted them by a client or contractor, but were otherwise busy that night. The tickets were for front row seats right behind home plate. The game went 16 innings and we stayed for the whole thing, later than midnight.

18 innings? Amateurs.

I hope that kid moves to Northern California. I think that there is a spot for him with the right field crew in Oakland.

He's like a young Bryce Harper!

Less bratty.

5 hours and 48 minutes? That's about how long most nine inning Red Sox/Yankees games are.

A century's worth of Cubs fan emotions expressed on one kid's face in one Pirates game.

Any sign of emotion in the next generation about baseball is reassuring. That's what I tell myself to feel better when my youngest 8 year old shows signs of having Don Zimmer impulses to kick dirt over balls and strike calls in Little League.

Bulgaroktonos: "how it makes daddy crazy when people swing 3-0"

Seems like 3-0 is a great time to swing, given that there's going to be an extra effort (probably) to get the ball in the strike zone and thus more hittable. Statistically, of course, you're probably right: a walk is more likely than a hit; might as well watch one go by.

Only 16 innings, but this game lasted almost five hours; when the work day was almost over, we assumed the game was too, so those of us who cared congregated in a conference room with a TV to see the end, calling spouses and loved ones to tell them we'd be a little late for dinner. Over the hours we kept calling to say it was going to be a while longer... go ahead and eat...

It was particularly hot and nasty out that day so I was glad to listen on the radio rather than be in the stands, unlike the last 18 inning Nationals game I attended.
