Ha, I clicked on the "previously" link and read that whole thread as if it were the new thread and felt like I had read it before and maybe this was a double or I was going insane and didn't I already order that t-shirt? and THAT WAS NOT FINE.

This new FPP, though?

This is fine.

Some recent context:

The GOP twitter account tweeted the first two panels of the original during the DNC (and got some pushback from KC and others, whose position was "you obviously don't give a shit about this, but the artist really disagrees with you")

that was only after the Nib had paid KC to draw this tho

A bit of context from last week: Here’s Why Webcomics Fans Have Been Piling on the GOP Twitter Account

Basically KC did a version of the comic with an elephant for the RNC, so you can understand how he'd be miffed to see the GOP twitter use it in such a blase way about the DNC. Dude's had some good thoughts about seeing your work snipped up and reproduced endlessly as a meme (sometimes sadly resigned, sometimes aggressively following up) so it's nice to see him diving in.

"so, thus, in conclusion, the gop account can eat me."

So it turns out trying to think of good tweets to make about Harambé is why the fire was allowed to get out of control...

The Nib has been putting out some of the best political commentary of this election. I'm thrilled that they paid KC Green for this.

This is just a terrifying reminder of all the things that are on fire in my personal life that I just have no idea about yet and I should have been running away from already.

Apparently, he's also Kickstartering a plush version of the "This Is Fine" dog.

They were burning there for you and me, by GOP, harambe

Every time I see the original This Is Fine I start humming The Mountain Goats' In The Craters On The Moon; "...when the room fills with smoke, lie down on the floor, in the declining years of the long war..."

This is amazing and I am annoyed at Kickstarter's algorithms for not realizing how directly this is in my wheelhouse.

Huh...maybe I should order two.

It says something that poor KC Green can't get paid for what must be thousands of "reprints" of his work, but we (the Internet) instinctively know it's wrong when a political party the artist disagrees with tries to use that same work for propaganda.

But then again, his work wouldn't have become so popular without those thousands of reprints...

Somebody could post an unrelated story about a screaming man running around a downtown American city with a homemade flamethrower and it might possibly be the new election thread. It's so hard to tell nowadays what is about the election.

Nope, someone's working on one, let's not muss this up.

I wonder why there are such blocky compression artifacts in the image.

The 2nd version with the elephant was like- someone steals your joke and makes it less funny so you slam dunk them with a funnier version of your own joke using them as the subject. This one strikes me as. When you make a joke and someone else mangles it up so bad that you feel the need to put your own joke out of its misery by removing all the humor out of it. I mean I guess that's what happened. But it seems really clear to me in the comic itself, even if I didn't know the backstory.

It's like 2 different but opposite reactions - strengthening the joke, and removing the joke.

I'm glad that when I backed the plush Kickstarter it wasn't yet fully backed and now is, and I backed it no more than an hour ago.

I love this.

I love it going the opposite direction from where you expect. I love the Harambe reference. I love how utterly defeated the little dog looks once he puts out the fire. I love the weird, slight JPEGing of the image.

I feel like I can't fully articulate how this comic speaks to me, but I can articulate that it does, and deeply.

I got to the "they shot a gorilla!" part and I actually for a second thought the artist had made that up as a sort of mysterious backstory, or a way to sum up how terrible and crazy this year has been through a sort of analogy. Because I forgot all about that gorilla. Because this year has been bananas.
posted by lunasol at 3:04 PM on August 3, 2016

So, the plush Kickstarter had a goal of $35k in 30 days.

It is currently at $125k after less than one day.

So what's up with the square jpeg artifacting style in the new comic? Some sort of attempt at watermarking?

That's the part of the comic that I don't understand. Out of everything that has happened this year, the gorilla shooting was the most justified and normal thing. Kid runs off from parents and climbs into gorilla enclosure.. what else was going to happen?
posted by I-baLL at 3:10 AM on August 5, 2016

I had the same reaction. I guess the gorilla has become some sort of meme in itself, but yeah. That panel really deflated the power of the strip for me.
