OK, that was funnier than it had any right to be.

Yep. I'd recognise the view from that first lift anywhere. Good memories on that one.

"Atrocity Exhibition" would actually be a great name for one of those rides that shoots you up into the air really fast on a big pole.

This can't be the only song that opens up with a drawn-out weeeeeee. I want, no, DEMAND a whole ecosystem of singers riding rollercoasters.

I get it.

(The Beast is pretty far up on my "to ride" list. Here's the (best, IMO) full POV video, if you're interested.)

Is there any purpose in explaining this to someone who has no clue why anyone is laughing? Or if I don't get it should I just do some comforting middle aged things and accept my lot in life?

After all the election thread titles and riffs on Hamilton, now I feel like I get an inside joke. I can only say you'd probably get it if you're a fan or otherwise fairly familiar with Joy Division.

Also, rather than Hamilton riffing titles, if we switched to Joy Division titles for the election threads, I'd be all for that.

Now I really wanna go back in time and convince Ian Curtis to ride a coaster with me.

I'll give it a shot. It's basically funny because of the juxtaposition of Joy Division's music, which is famously dark and depressing, with the notion of its singer Ian Curtis saying "wheee!" as he rides a roller-coaster. Probably a lot of people also hear the first few notes of this track and, as I do, instantly hear the entire track in their heads, so the fact that it ends after 14 seconds is also surprising and funny and recontextualizes the song in a funny way.

Yeah, and I suspect it's also (possibly) riffing on those pictures of Ian Curtis having an awesome time at an office party in 1977 that surfaced a couple of years back.

The full sentence which Ian Curtis sings is "we were strangers for way too long". When you change it into "wheee! were strangers for way too long" it almost becomes scary - it's as if the sentence has multiple personalities.

After reading the first dozen comments I had to ask my Millennial daughter to explain it to me. I was too busy listening to the "spiritual jazz" curated three posts above to listen to Joy Division, I guess.

This thread is raising all kinds of questions for me about what age group is most likely to know Joy Division. I mean, the song in the video came out in 1979. But obviously most of Ian Curtis' popularity came after he died.

I wonder how many people who were like "I'm too old for this" would recognize New Order?

I am too lazy to look at what MeFi demographic breakdowns have been done, but I thought GenX is pretty solidly in the middle of the normal curve for MeFi users' ages? Is that off?

If you don't find this funny because you don't have context for it I can thoroughly recommend the Anyon Corbjin movie "Control", which is basically an Ian Curtis biopic.
