It is always safe to assume that I definitely love your dog! No worries.

Just... not in the open mouth kissing kind of way.

I'm so glad you made this post... because I love the Bottle Rockets. I mean a lot of their songs could be considered novelty songs, but oh lordie. Thousand Dollar Car, and Radar Gun were some formative tunes for me as I discovered the joy of alt-country.

I got to meet them back in 1996ish at a show in Austin MN, of all places. They were great.

Dogs: also great.

The Brooklyn Side is one of the great unnoticed classic albums of the 90s.
"This CD contains analog tape hiss, a single coil guitar hum, tube crackle and truck noise that we found to be inspirational."

The kind of person who has had to be in another state all week on a business trip, has had an exhausting week, and missing their dog, their wife, and seeing them both together.

I mean, I'm not tearing up at all, my eyes are just sweaty.

I needed this.

I love your dog, though. I mean, you can absolutely love your dog, too, as you should, but I will also love your dog.

(Dogs love me, and I'm OK with that. Dogs run up to me and their owners say "he never does that and I'm sorry" and I'm like "PUPPY!" People don't believe me when I say that dogs love me until they see this sort of thing happens. Dogs somehow just know.)

My dog is a hate-filled little beastie. She's super cute though, so people want to love her, and I feel so bad about not letting strangers pet her. She's the least merry cocker spaniel ever. She loves me and keeps my feet warm at night, so she's got that.

It's okay if she doesn't love me, I still love her. Good dog.

What I find strange is that when I take my dog, Bailey, to doggy day-care everyone there immediately recognizes her and is SO excited to see her. I have seen other people drop their dogs off there, they only react this way to Bailey. She gets the same treatment when I take her to the vet and she really likes going to the vet.

I mean, I get that I like her better than other dogs, she's my dog, that's expected. That other dog people feel that way about her make me a little...perplexed.

This is us exactly, except replace "hate" with "fear". And some strangers (especially but not only the drunk ones) are super aggressive about trying to love all over him and it's so scary and awful. Fuck the people who did an awful job of loving my dog before he was my dog but thank you to the people who understand how to love him from a distance, even when he's being kind of an asshole.

Hugs to all the people who are working with dogs that are sometimes challenging to love.

I feel your pain, Ruki. I love my dog (he's a rat terrier/chihuahua mix, and he's 13 pounds of anger on 4 legs), and he adores me, my wife (thank goodness), my cousin, my roommate, and two adopted cousins. He hates everyone else on sight and unequivocally, and that's on meds. Obligatory photo. I wish I could take him places, I wish he wasn't scared of the world, but he loves us so all we can do is take care of him as he is.

Two of my favorite things together - dogs and the Bottle Rockets. Welfare Music makes me happy sad. Kerosene makes me mad sad. Gas Girl reminds me of every goofy ass crush I ever had. The previously mentioned Radar Gun makes me drive way, way too fast. Perfect Far Away is just a damn fine "I feel done wrong" song.

On the dog front: Sammy is a hate filled little fluff ball but damn does he love my wife. (He's ok with me.) Betty is filled with the fear that comes with being 5.5 lbs in five-ton world. In the three years she's lived with us, I've held her probably 6 times. Cookie - well, Cookie is a beloved earth angel and beer guardian. Goofy little Chihuahua Corgi. And then there's the newest one - Pippy who's a ball hog and currently trying to worm her way behind my back and looking pensive that I won't let her..

drewbage1847 , your Sammy looks he could be a long-lost cousin to my Figlet (he's in my profile pic). So cute!

Could be! My wife and I went to the shelter to go find a cat (found a gorgeous cat too) and then she saw Sammy who licked her nose - that's when I knew I was getting a long haired chihuahua. He's adorable, he's a moopet, he's vicious and a time travelling assassin chihuahua, but he's vicious time travelling assassin chihuahua lion man.

He's also a jerk who makes an incredible bed warmer.

Thanks to the owners of difficult dogs for their support. I realize I committed a crime most foul by not including a picture, so here is my little beastie. Her name is Zelda, because my cat's name is Gatsby.
posted by Ruki at 7:04 PM on September 16, 2016 [3 favorites]

Oh, and to not abuse the edit button, we suspect Zelda, in her previous life, belonged to a backyard breeder who abandoned her when she became too old to breed. She weighed 15 pounds and was absolutely terrified of everything when we adopted her. I don't blame her for being hateful. I'm just glad I can give her a sweet life in which she's spoiled rotten (and a healthy weight). Her snoring next to me right now brings me joy.

This thread is making me so happy; it's hard sometimes - dogs are "supposed" to love everyone and be good natured all the time, and it's hard having that puppy who just isn't that dog. So thanks, y'all.

Blu is largely the same - thankfully he's a complete social butterfly with people and loves nearly everyone, but he is nervous to the point of aggression around other dogs. It's tough trying to care for a dog who doesn't know how to dog properly sometimes, but he has so many human friends that on the whole I think he's a happy doggo.

Dogs DO love everyone (well, everyone that's friendly anyhow). If they react differently, it's only because they've been taught to by some human. I like to think that there is a little part of even the most "hateful" dogs that still loves everyone.

There are no bad dogs, only bad owners/breeders/trainers/etc.

Some dogs are naturally reserved. And some dogs are very devoted to their jobs (be they assigned or self-chosen), and don't always feel like they have time to socialize with every random human they meet, because they need to stay focused on the livestock/ the perimeter/ the baby/ this cart over here, which clearly needs to be towed somewhere with all due haste/ That a visible body of water contains playing children, and that any or all of said children could need an immediate rescue at any time/ TENNNNNIS BALLLLLLS!!!

And that's okay. They are still veryveryvery good dogs, and should be treated as such, even if they need to be met on their own terms.
