Rialto, the baby sea otter, is now a Canadian. The Seattle Aquarium paid him a fond farewell just yesterday. Orphaned and near death when found at Rialto Beach, WA, he spent six weeks at the aquarium, fattening up.

Is one of the otters named "Nessie"?

If we're going to talk otter cam, this is the one I've been rewatching all day today. River otters, not sea otters, and just a clip, but watch until the end.

Monterey Bay Acquarium Otter Cam is the first one I became aware of (because it's closest to me). There are a lotta otters near me, in Morro Bay, Avila Beach and Pismo Beach, but lack of designated, controlled areas mean no dedicated 'otter cams'. just plenty of otter watchers uploading to YouTube. One of the earliest otter articles I found (1979) blamed the otters for the near extinction of the Pismo Clams, but I blame Bugs Bunny.

Rialto just got scooped up by a human! Is it dinner time? Is it grooming time? Is it - the human just walked past with Rialto burritoed in a towel! And they moved the camera! And now Rialto is in a playpen and is drinking a bottle! Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

Haha, this is so cute. It reminds me a lot of Monterey's Penguin Cam.

"Otter Cam" was awesome, but "Spotted Jelly Cam" was even better!

She's trying to dry Rialto off thoroughly but Rialto just wants to play with the towel! Rialto has chilled out and is grooming himself a little! Rialto is curling into a ball!!!
posted by Mizu at 7:27 PM on September 20, 2016 [1 favorite]

So odd to see a sea creature in a playpen, though I'm sure they know what they're do--

Awwww, he just curled up into a ball again!

I read this as "baby otter scam" and my first reaction was "you know what, that would probably work"

My favorite sea-life cam is the California Academy of Science's Shark Lagoon Cam--primarily for the rays, not the sharks. I love the way rays swim and watching them can zone me out peacefully better than most things.

ATTENTION: The keeper is giving him a belly rub. I REPEAT: The keeper is giving him a belly rub.

Now the keeper is stroking and picking at his back fur very carefully with her hands ... is she grooming him?
posted by Sauce Trough at 9:46 PM on September 20, 2016

That is one relaxed otter puppy. Apparently grooming is very soothing.

I so want to see the keeper pick it up in a towel burrito, but I have to go and teach a class in a moment, and I'm going to miss it. Sigh.

I wonder if I could have the video stream running in a corner of my classroom as additional educational material. We are talking about Wikileaks today. I suspect it might be hard to draw a connection.

Sea ferrets!

Water weasels.

Otters are jerks. Their natural mating habits often involve the male biting the female's nose until it bleeds profusely. To say nothing of what they do with baby seals.
posted by Sys Rq at 4:03 AM on September 21, 2016

Shh. This one is too small to be a jerk. He'll be a jerk later, but not yet.

What jerkish things do female otters do, apart from bleeding profusely when their noses are bitten?

following otters on instagram is confusing because its either gay humans or mustelids, both are delightful, so it's not really a problem.

Kink-shaming: not just for humans anymore? I kind of like the idea of turning the internet's scorching critical eye on the rest of the animal kingdom.

Wait until you hear about the perversions some species of spiders get up to. Talk about your "vagendas of manocide."
