September In the Rain

The leaves of brown came tumbling down
Remember, in September, in the rain
The sun went out just like a dying ember
  That September in the rain

September songs? Earth, Wind & Fire made my favorite, although this one is pretty good.

September morning still can make me feel that way.

(On side two of that record, Diamond covers a Martha and the Vandellas song, a Monkees song, a Sammy Davis, Jr. song, a Walker Brothers song, and "Stagger Lee." Opera buffet, indeed.)

Well, for me, it was, is and always will be Dinah Washington's September in the Rain, which I heard when it was very, very new and I was very, very young. And which always evoked the same pining for what is lost melancholy from the first time I heard it. Funny how that works...

Oh, come on, there's only one September Song.

When it comes to September Song, the original is still the greatest.

Yeah, I would have linked to Walter Huston but I thought Willie would be more acceptable to your average MeFite.

I've always had a soft spot for the Beatles' version of this song, but it just lends itself well to covers in general. George Shearing's version is still my favorite though, even without words.

Somehow though I'd missed that Dinah Washington version, so thank you! Such a voice.

O/T, is there a name for that style of slice-of-life album photo shown in the Youtube link on her album? That style of album shot is so evocative of that era's albums, it seems like there has to be a name for that type of album artwork layout. Always makes me think of childhood in the 70s thumbing through my Dad's reel-to-reel (!) and album collections. The 50s just seemed so exotic and distant.

The album was done in the early 60s.

Er Ya go.
Jazz albums of the 50s and 60s. Quite good.
