I it's a missed opportunity not to have this hooked to an Oculus Rift. We don't quite have 'trodes yet, and the OR is the closest real world tech to what Case used.

I'll be taunting him with this as his "loaner deck". Thanks.

It is shocking me how badly I want one. It'd be especially great if it could serve as a bluetooth iOS keyboard as well as jacking in to any old monitor laying around.

Where's the ethernet port? There's no point to "jacking in" wirelessly.

I realize the Raspberry Pi 3 that's inside it has one but it needs to be prominent and external!

I feel like the keyboard should be mechanical, but it's a pretty nice job anyway.

These things all feel very substantial. Like actual "gear" that a hacker would have. Powerful, fast, ubiquitous computing has (in reality) moved in the other direction. Smart Phones and laptops are engineered to be as light and ephemeral as possible, with as few peripherals as possible, no hard casing, and very minimalist and "elegant" physical designs. Wires, connection, plastic: all reduced as much as possible. Rare software, like one of Case's ICE programs? Pretty much everything exists as data in a cloud service. Physical connectors (like a VR helmet)? Even headphones seem to be headed out the door...

Mechanical or virtual, no in between. When they go technical, go old-school and veritas, when they're analog, go full virtú.

Just cords. Smart audio interfaces (Siri, Alexa, Cortana, Google Assistant) are the new hotness. Computing in moving in the direction of seamless and ubiquitous. The zipless search, so to speak. The destination, of course, is Star Trek's Computer.

Man, I've thought about doing this myself for years, just hollowing out a C64 keyboard and stuffing with mini-PC components. So happy to see that a) someone has done this and b) the stickers!

Also as soon as I saw this posted I thought, "griphus will love this." And, uh, obviously.

However... I'm a big fan of the idea of taking some 80s computer tech, rolling it into a the minimum-possible comms machine with decent (ie, very low surface) crypto and using that for secure stuff. You can't do much to compromise a Z80 running a pared-down stack in an 8K ROM, feeding off a few gigs of OTP in flash, a vocoder and a decades-old GSM phone or POTS modem. Won't get you onto Whatsapp, but that's rather the point.

Build that into a funky retro case with some old-school LEDs and toggle switches, and the kids will eat it up, I tell ya.

With the release of wireless Air Pods, William Gibson pointed out the concept of "jacking in" was officially archaic. My heart broke a little.

I wouldn't condone using an Oculus Rift but maybe getting something more modern like a Vive stuffed into an old Virtual Boy would make the cherry on top for an interface like this.

And if you're going to put any computer in an old C64 case, make it a Novena - Sutajio-Kosagi is the decker's spiritual successor to the Ono-Sendai.

I imagine that the Star Trek Computer turns out a little bit differently when it's not in a post-scarcity society:
INT. SPACESHIP BRIDGE - CONTINUOUS

The ship is under HEAVY BOMBARDMENT by an unknown force. The
newest version of the free, ad-supported StarGuide navigation
module StarGuide offers evasive maneuvering functionality for
the first half hour of use, thereafter purchasable as an IMP
(In-Module Purchase).

                          CAPTAIN
Computer, update the StarGuide navigation module.

                          COMPUTER
Updating...uh oh! Your StarPay information is out of date.
    Please update your billing information.

                          CAPTAIN
But it's a fucking free module! Why do I have do this NOW?

                          COMPUTER
Your StarPay information is out of date. Please update your
    billing information.

                          CAPTAIN
                      (sighs)
Fucking...ok, my StarPay account ID is–

                          COMPUTER
For your security, voice input is disabled. Please use your
    StarKeys input attachment to continue.

                          CAPTAIN
Are you KIDDING me? I don't even know where–

                          GUNNER
Captain, we're sitting ducks out here!

                          CAPTAIN
–just shut up for a second while I work this thing!

                          GUNNER
Your face is always buried in a holograph! Can't I get your
your undivided attention for even ONE SECOND?

                          CAPTAIN
Oh my god, we talked about this! You know that I have to
keep up with the news about ships, and planets, and lasers!

                          GUNNER
That's what you say, but then you're obviously dicking
around on StarNet! Don't you worry that you're addicted to
these little squirts of information, and that you use them
as a kind of salve to ease the existential burden of life
under Late-Late-Late Capitalism? Don't you think that if we
just took the time out to really connect with each other
    that–

The ship explodes.

Eh, except the AirPods are only going to be available in late October. The iPhone 7 ships with wired headphones but the connector that the wire uses is a lightning connector. Proprietary. Ships with a lightning-to-3.5mm adapter though. Either way, you can't listen to music on wired headphones while charging your phone.
