I must admit I know very little about Peres' impact, and hurried here excitedly hoping to read some interesting thoughts and opinions from fellow Mefites on whether he was a net positive or made things worse.

perhaps a lot of people are like me, and don't know much about him, his policies or his contributions :), though the occasional ☮ I see posted indicates that he did OK.

That video linked by uniliteral makes it seem like he was a lovely fellow, with some inspiring things to say, but obviously that's the goal of the video.

I remember him as a right winger and a hawk, but sometimes the hawks are better able to negotiate peace.

My understanding is that Peres was most closely associated with the left, and had often run under the Labor Party etc.

AP and Reuters both have decent career write-ups/obits which can flesh out some of the OP links, and Al-Jazeera (surprise) has a much more negative take if you are looking for a different view.

You are correct, rosswald, it's been many years and Israeli politics have been depressing for so long.

Shimon Peres: Israeli war criminal whose victims the West ignored [Middle East Monitor].

The one most likely to raise the ire of the US liberals praising Peres today is his offer to sell nuclear weapons to apartheid South Africa.

He wasn't perfect, but was representative of a level headed, peace seeking generation that is rapidly (to everyone's detriment) dying off. Definitely on the lefty side of things... Israel is a lesser place without his influence.

Peres is something of a tragic figure IMO. His thing, which he won the Nobel Prize for, was the Oslo Accords between Israel and the PLO. For a time it looked as though his country might have peace - there was a roadmap, starting with graduated Israeli withdrawals and the establishment of an elected Palestinian body, and terminating with (what was not acknowledged to be, but would have been) a Palestinian state. And the roadmap was followed for a time, but there were hiccups and modifications and delays, and then people realised that they'd left the map a long time ago and nobody was interested in going any further. Which is where we are today. Things are better IMO than before the Accords, but they were only ever meant to be the start of a process; that process has stalled irreversibly.

It must have been crushing to Peres, because he would have gone down in history as a great statesman and a peacemaker. Instead, at best he's going to be remembered as the guy who laid the groundwork for the real reconciliation, decades after his death.
