(In case anyone is too scared to watch - this is not a snuff video, and there's no blood or gore apart from the bait they throw into the water). I hope that's enough reassurance without giving away spoilers.

(Also, how can they not know whether or not there's someone in their shark cage? That seems like a rather large failure to pay attention to what they are doing.)

Of course I was worried about the diver - but I also felt bad for the shark. Is that weird?

I'm there with you, helmutdog. Shark's out where sharks live, it's people making the effort to bug it.

(Also, it seemed bloody around the gills.)

I can't believe the water didn't turn brown.

I can't believe the water didn't turn brown.

The inside of the person's wetsuit probably did.

(Also, it seemed bloody around the gills.)

I think/hope that was from the bait fish it swallowed right before getting stuck in the cage.

That diver's nickname is chum from this day forward.

my guess is the guy shooting the video wasn't a crew member -- probably waiting in line for his turn in the cage.

Lot of concern in my neck of the woods that this kind of tourism experience is going to cause harm long term by training the sharks to approach boats and divers.

What it says on the tin.

See, I think that's where they went wrong. Conventional stainless steel is much more suited to the task.

(Also, how can they not know whether or not there's someone in their shark cage? That seems like a rather large failure to pay attention to what they are doing.)

The guy with the video camera didn't seem to know if anyone is in there; however, judging by the reaction of the guy in the orange shirt - who I think was crew - he knew damn well somebody was in there, which is why he jumped to lift the bars and to try to haul on the rope before realizing the shark would be on top of whoever was in there. That guy's body language was screaming to me that somebody was in there with the shark and that he couldn't do a fucking thing about it.

What a bunch of jackasses. Chumming to attract sharks for wealthy tourists should be banned.

" ..... was there anybody in there?"
After the shark violently—is there any other exit mode for such a creature?—exits the cage, a few seconds later we hear: "Nobody's in the cage." And a few seconds after that: "Yeah, somebody's in the cage. It has to be, um, Ming. It's Ming."

Fortunately, that was probably just a tourist and the guides were clearly not beholden to his narrative. In the end everyone (including the shark, I think) was fine.

I am truly impressed by the lack of swearing in this video. If I were there, the sky, the ocean, everyone's ears, would be so much bluer.

...was anybody in there....?

Actually, no.

If you read the account of the dive group, when the shark lunged and accidentally got into the cage the guy that was in it got knocked out of it, through the bottom bars. He was (thankfully?) underneath it while the shark was thrashing around inside the cage. He was underneath it contemplating two other great white sharks who were hanging around waiting their turn to be baited with hunks of tuna, and waiting for his earliest opportunity to wriggle back up into the cage and up to the surface. Fortunately as he was an experience diver instead of going back into the cage through the large and easy opening the shark had made he went back in through the small and not so easy open he had left it by, following his air hose.

The situation was actually even more hairy than it looked.

Terrifying. Weird though - taking off your hat and throwing it on the ground is a really weird reaction in a life or death situation. Thats like something a coach does when they are pissed off at a game. I guess people do strange things in a panic.

Nah, he's the much-less-likeable novel version of Matt Hooper. Or perhaps the Mayor.

I love the way the diver makes sure the deckhand's got his camera before he thinks about giving the OK signal, let alone getting out of the cage. That is such an... underwater photographer thing to do.

The crew definitely knew there was someone in there; the second line they haul in (after opening the cage to let out the shark) is an umbilical air supply. What they were actually expecting to find at the other end, of course, is another story.

There are divers in the other cage — you can see their hands breaking the surface at 1:11, at which point the guy who's been holding the diver's camera ambles over in an unhurried fashion to let them out. It doesn't look like they had any hassle, so my takeaway from this is that cage diving with chummed sharks is a bit like camping with lions: you don't have to be a long way away from the chum, just farther away than somebody else.

I thought both those guys were taking off their hats so they wouldn't lose them in the water by leaning over so far.

My husband went cage diving three years ago. He honestly wanted to go without the cage. He would have loved this experience.

This is why I stay home.
posted by stormpooper at 11:38 AM on October 14, 2016

how can they not know whether or not there's someone in their shark cage?

Perhaps because the diver had a way of exiting the cage while the shark was in it? From the video desc:

"There was a single diver inside the cage. He ended up outside the bottom of the cage, looking down on two great white sharks. The diver is a very experienced dive instructor, remained calm, and when the shark thrashed back outside the cage, the diver calmly swam back up and climbed out completely uninjured."

And they think the shark is ok too.. from one of the comments from the video poster:

"The blood could be from thrashing in the metal cage, possibly the tuna, but it was evaluated by a biologist and determined to be a minor wound and the shark was spotted the next day totally fine."

The video is the starkest illustration of the fact that sharks are not subject to reason.
