A friend has SIGSEGV. Sometimes I wish I'd thought of it first, other times I'm glad that I don't have a vanity plate because the chances of someone actually delivering a (presumably invalid) complaint about my driving would no doubt increase dramatically.

A friend of mine posted to a local unix email list asking for vanity plate ideas. He decided to use my suggestion: UNIX ROX. After he'd gotten the plates I drove his car to go skiing and decided to get something to eat at McDonalds. There were some teenagers waiting in line behind me and the driver leaned out his window and yelled: "Dude, what's UNIX?" How was I supposed to answer that? When I bought my Nissan 300ZX I thought of XLR8 or 300ZX, but was pleasantly surprised to find that my first choice (MY Z) was available.

I was going to get "LINUX" in 1994, but failed to for two reasons: I was 15, and didn't own a car; and I figured that the odds of anybody in Virginia ever getting a plate that said "LINUX" were so ridiculously small that there was no rush. Doh.

Back to personalized license plates? I remember a magazine I have mentioned maybe too often did a hilarious piece using personalized plates from California alone to summarize wellknown films and literary classics. Example: Lolita: | ID8JLB8 | | SO | | AMMI | | PERV | (Hmmm...looks less funny here.) I've also read about "provocative" personalized plates the states won't issue, like ICU2COP or GOVT SUX--they also check for non-English dirty words like MERDE, which somebody snapped up back in the early days, before they got wise. One woman had no problem a few years back getting 3MTA3, because the DMV never considered how it would read when seen in a rearview mirror.

A man down the street from me has the honor of owning a FUH Q plate. Not sure how his wife and kids feel about it - he used to have it on a black vette and now it's on a mini-van. The effect just isn't the same. The realtor who sold us our house just bought his first upscale car; the license plate is U4E-AH.
