Also, if Emily Gilmore is not one of the best fictional characters in television history, I don't know who is.

I'm irrationally sad about Richard not being in this. I swear that line from Emily about half of her being gone got to me.

I hadn't even thought about the fact that they'd have to deal with Edward Herrmann's death and was surprised at how that hit me.

It felt a little more consciously sentimental than the show, but I might be glossing over that in my memory in favor of remembering the humorous parts.

EMILY GILMORE IS WEARING JEANS. !!!

I am so excited for this, but I couldn't help but stare at Lauren Graham's makeup. Are they intentionally trying to age her for the show? It just reminds me so much of Lea Thompson in Back to the Future II, when she's Grandma McFly.

I came here to write that exact thing about Emily in jeans. EMILY IN JEANS. What is happening.

Season 7 was the one without Amy Sherman-Palladino's involvement. I suspect that the first few minutes of the new series will be either catching up with or retconning the events of that season.

I got a buck that says the phrase "gas leak year" will be said.

My best friend's mother is the real life version and I could write a book about all the times she came home crying (we live together) after spending any amount of time with her mom. But the thing is that what I remember of the show before I restarted season 1 is that she wasn't that bad. So now I'm excited rewatch the whole thing and see her progression from Worst Parent Ever to SHE'S WEARING JEANS.

But I still have hope this may right some of the wrongs (mostly that Luke is terrible & Lorelai can do better. And Rory is terrible and while I thought Logan was a good match for her, all her boyfriends are terrible. Also, it's like 10 years later. Those women need to MOVE ON) and I'm not doing anything else Thanksgiving. This and a few bottles of wine sounds just about perfect.

Jess was actually the reason I quit watching the show. He was the kind of douchebro that the scripts want you to love as a Sensitive Bad Boy and oh god how I hate that. Not that I thought Dean was her lifelong love or anything, he was so clearly the boyfriend she was going to break up with the first semester of college when she realized that she had so many more prospects outside her tiny town (not like that happened with my freshman roommate from a wide spot in the road in SW Virginia or anything...) Logan was probably the most entertaining, even though he was kind of a horrible person, but at least the show seemed to know when he was being horrible. Unlike Jess.

posted by Itaxpica at 7:31 PM on October 25, 2016 [11 favorites]

I like Logan and Rory because I actually think they challenged each other and made the other a better person. Logan was one of the few people who'd call Rory out. I don't think they should've ended up together, but I feel at least they grew as people with each other.

Jess turned out fine but that also seemed like ridiculous wish fulfillment. We can all agree Dean was the worst, though, right?

(Marty ... was ... fine. Marty was way too much of a "nice guy" even in the beginning. Wayne Wilcox was absolutely charming in that role, but I can't be Team Marty. I think I'm Team Paris. Or Team Rory-Other-Third-of-a-Triad with Doyle. Although Rory's not with Doyle. They just share Paris until he dies mysteriously in his mid 40s.)

I don't buy this whole "none of the guys are good enough for Rory" because Rory is pretty terrible her own self college years onwards.

OMG, this. Rory doesn't even think of herself as privileged, even though her rich grandparents and then her rich father pay her entire elite high school and college tuition, her grandparents buy her a car, and she lives rent free with her grandparents and then with her boyfriend in palatial accommodations.

Unrelated to Lorelai or Rory, but my favorite love interest character on the show was maybe Dave Rygalski -- it's too bad he had to be written out.

I fell in love with this show when its first season aired; watched and rewatched a lot of episodes (back then, taped from the TV on VHS! Wow does that feel quaint). There were a lot of wonderful things about it, and my favorite aspects were the friendships and conversations with so many different supportive female characters.

Speaking of friendships: back then, I was able to convince a good friend to watch some episodes; I introduced her to a few early episodes and lent her some of my tapes. She became a fan of the show and eventually watched the entire series. (We are still friends and I'm going to send her this link right now!)

I have lots of fond memories of the early seasons, and still quote from them every so often. If I feel myself getting choked up I sometimes say to myself, "What's with the waterworks, lady?" And one of my favorite funny lines of all time (of all time) is from the episode "The Deer Hunters" when Rory talks to Lane about the accident with the deer (even thinking about it now is making me crack up! I thought about typing it here but it's truly the whole setup/scene that sells it).

And the episode titles could be so punny. Aside from "The Deer Hunters" I remember "Cinnamon's Wake" which was one of my favorite episodes at the time: it was a great example of the quirky, heartwarming and humorous nature of the show. (I wished so much that I could share it with one of my late profs, who taught a course on James Joyce -- I'd like to think he would have been amused by the title and the episode. We once had a nerdy literary bonding moment when I told him that one of my favorite books, Howards End, didn't have an apostrophe but I often saw it mistakenly referenced with one, and he said he totally understood because Finnegans Wake didn't have an apostrophe, either.)

Anyway, it was generally my go-to show for warm and fuzzies, but the writing really shifted and my beloved characters changed a lot; I didn't really enjoy the stories much after Rory went to college and the tension grew between her and Lorelai. So I stopped watching regularly somewhere in season 5; haven't gotten back around to catching up on what I missed.

Still, I watched the trailer and am excited about this. Now I'm thinking of some other episodes and characters from way back when -- such as Dave, and Drella who played Black Sabbath on her harp, and Luke's old flame Rachel (the one-episode photographer), and the roaming musicians (one played by Grant-Lee Phillips). They probably won't appear in these new episodes, but I'm glad so many of the regular/recurring characters are back.

When I saw Emily in her house and all that furniture, it gave me a flashback to that one episode (can't remember which, offhand) where she told Lorelai and Rory to stick Post-It notes on the furniture they wanted to be willed to them...(!) Richard not being in the new episodes is going to be sad; I hope he gets a lovely send-off in the show. RIP Edward Herrmann.

I was re-watching the series with the beau in anticipation of the revival, and we just recently got to the end of Season 4, and I was thinking about watching Seasons 5, 6, and 7 again. The beau hasn't seen them yet.

At the moment, I'm kind of leaning toward come combination of 4 really is the perfect end point for the series mixed with let's watch a few of my favorite highlights from 5, 6, and 7. It's like, I can tell you the important stuff -- do we really need to sour two really excellent seasons, and two pretty good seasons with the subpar last three seasons?

My wife is the die hard fan, and I casually watch them. I know Black Friday is already scheduled for this, although I suspect I will wake up on that day around 7 or 8 that morning and she will still be in the living room on the second run through.

I think my wife's biggest thrill was that we did the WB Studio Tour in 2006(?), and got to walk around the town square set dressed as Star's Hollow, she has a picture of her standing outside of Luke's. Plus we got to walk around the Dragonfly Inn soundstage.

The show is my wife's TV equivalent of comfort food. A few years back we lost our first cat after a prolonged illness, and figured we would watch the next episode on Netflix. It turned out to be the "Cinnamon's Wake" episode, which, while good, is all about a dead cat. Not exactly the distraction we were looking for.
