"The Responsible Prison Project: Reshaping the Texas Prison System for Greater Public Safety" is 104 page report authored by five prisoners of the Texas prison system giving particular insight as to how the prison system can be reformed to be more rehabilitative and improve inmate behavior.

The report is unique because it's written entirely by prisoners, and gives valuable insight into the debate as to whether the US prison system should be rehabilitating inmates or simply punishing them.

The Marshall Project, a non-profit devoted to journalism about the criminal justice system, has made the entire report available here.

I will say this - "black market salad" is not something that I would have ever thought existed.

Also, the point about nutrition ties back to the stories about how ramen has superceded cigarettes as prison currency, being a reliable source of nutrients needed for developing muscle.
