The Google Maps Streetview Player • Input either a starting point and end point, or a provide a file of a route, and Brian Folts's app will provide you with a Google Streetview maps-lapse. (Tips: Check the Advanced Options box, and tweak the FPS or mode of transportation; and mess about with the progress bar in case the app gets ahead of itself.) — Routeview is a very similar app, with a few more more ways to configure your ride.

There other apps on the web that do similar things, depending on your needs, bandwidth, CPU power, etc. For instance:

Gaiagi Driver: lets you track your movement on four separate windows: Google Earth, Google Maps, Bing Maps, and Google Streetview; pretty CPU/bandwidth intensive, though.

RealIndoor: designed for Bicyclists, or those on stationary bikes; has a terrain map in the corner and other, more biking-specific ways to tinker with settings.

When I was a kid, I used to sit in the back of the car and just thumb through the atlas imagining the places on the map.* Now I like finding remote and out of the way places and wandering around them in Street View at work. Maybe I'll just drive from here to Prudhoe Bay tomorrow.

*And occasionally imagining how I would conquer the world from my base of power in Apex, NC.
