DALEKS CONQUER AND DESTROY.

50 years ago and a week and a half or so from now, Patrick Troughton took the now iconic British sci-fi show Dr. Who into the first regeneration story and it was a doozy. Aired once and lost in a fire (I think), The Power of the Daleks has been reconstructed as a animation based on still photos and a full audio recording. See it on Nov. 19th or at a theater near you.

I write this not to mock, but to express my genuine joy at this.

From a gentler time, when the doctor had a sensible haircut. Like Moe.

I am so happy about this.

The close correlation between this 50th anniversary and the election is frightening. At least it reminds us that Trump's hair could be worse (and maybe it will be after his regeneration).

Weren't these tapes among those that the BBC erased?

Anyway, I'm just posting to link to the stained glass Dalek.

At the very bottom of the "More Info" section of the Fathom Events page:

Doctor Who Fans - We want you to have fun at these cinema events – but safety is paramount. Please note that attending in costume is fine, however masks, face-concealing make-up, fake weapons as well as any costumes that conceal what you are carrying, your natural body shape or face are strictly prohibited.
(Now where did I put that clip of Carol Cleveland saying "Oh, you're no fun anymore!"?)

It wasn't from this episode, but Patrick Troughton gave us the moment that The Doctor went from cranky crackpot time travelled to bona fide galactic hero: "There are some corners of the universe which have bred the most terrible things. Things which act against everything we believe in. They must be fought!"

zooropa: I know a lot of people kind of write off the first doctor, but really think that the most perfect distillation of Doctor Who's message comes in the very first episode:

Ian: The whole tribe should be watching. Everyone should know how to make fire.
Za: Everyone cannot be leader.
Ian: No, that's perfectly true. But in our tribe, the firemaker is the least important man.
Za: Ha! I do not believe this.
Doctor: He is the least important because we can all make fire.

Slightly worried that Power might not match up to the perfect story that people have had in their heads for fifty years.

I've always wanted more animated Who - the surrealist ongoing Animated Second Doctor would be amazing.

I'm super-excited these exist and will absolutely watch. But I continue to harbor mild disappointment that the best animation the Beeb can afford is equivalent to a Flash cartoon from Icebox.com in 2001.

If the excitement is too much help is available.

For those of us Canadian with malice aforethought, Cineplex Odeon seems to be showing this starting November 30th.
