On The Media has completed Busted: America's Poverty Myths -- a 5-part series on poverty in the US and reporting about poverty. It begins with #1: The Poverty Tour [link to episode page, 25m, transcript available]
#2: Who Deserves To Be Poor? [41m]
#3: Rags To Riches [33m]
#4: When The Safety Net Doesn't Catch You [26m]
If you only listen to one of these, #5: Breaking News Consumers Handbook: Poverty In America Edition [22m] is the one I would recommend.

100% agree with skewed. This is some truly excellent reporting.

I've listened to all of these and they're heartbreaking. The segment about a woman and her family who got evicted when one of her sons was the victim of a shooting almost brought me to tears.

This is a really good series. I cannot recommend it highly enough. I want to send the link to politicians.

I'm only finding the first episode in either Podcast Addict or Google Play Music. Is there a trick to getting the rest?

In GPM at least, you have to download the whole episode and skip to the poverty installment.
You want Personal Responsibility, Race to the Bottom, The System is Rigged, and Poor Judgment.

This is like 1/2 of my patient population. Their stories are heartbreaking. The worst is the number of people who die in their 40's and 50's.

"On the Media" is a great show, and yet I know no one who listens to it.

It is perhaps because I am going through some emotional stuff at this time in my life, but I had tears in my eyes when I listened to every single episode of this series. Heart renting.

We really need stories like these to get the kind of attention mainstream nothingburgers get. So much great information here. The bit about empathy versus compassion, the lady who had a premature baby, Ben Franklin's typical BS erasure of the women whose free labor he benefited from, how "lifting [oneself] up by [one's] bootstraps" was originally a phrase that mean "doing the impossible." Thank you for posting. I'm spreading these stories around.

Is this available as a podcast? I can see "On the media" but I can't seem to find this mini series.

I don't know if it is available as a separate podcast, but each of these pieces were embedded in an episode of On The Media.

I also agree that Brooke is a real delight and a treasure. In particular her graphic novel/book about the media was interesting and educational.

If you're grabbing podcast episodes, you want the episodes from Sept 29, Oct 6, Oct 13, Oct 20, and Oct 27. I can't find a podcast link for just the Busted series.

Thanks so much for collecting the links together. When Brooke seemed to be "away" for several episodes prior to 'Busted' I grumbled to myself, and then it came out -- no wonder. Totally worthwhile miniseries, really deserves archival, really should be listened to by politicians in every state...
Before the first 'Busted' week, I had just finished listening to the APM Uncertain Hour 8-episode series, which is also about understanding welfare reform 20 years later. It was neat to listen to the two programs back-to-back. (Gotta admit I'm a total OTM stan, though.)
