Also what's up with that gravel tar filler ugh.

The CDOT quote from which I stole the post title is literally the only reason I made this post. It is a triumph of government agency spokespersonship.

no offense, I just couldn't pass that up

No offense taken. I know it's kind of thin--it's single-ply!

I'd say they should do this in New York City, but with all the roadwork happening on a daily basis in this town, we'd probably completely obliterate the rainforests in a single year. And yes, that's with single-ply.

Do they apply it standing or sitting?

From the first link:

It’s not clear how many communities in Colorado rip from the roll when it comes time to blot the crack.

Heh. Referenced in the article: "CDOT Hot Mix Asphalt Crack Sealing and Filling Best Practices Guidelines."

Here they are, wherein the authors bring the research. It contains important terminology:

Hot-air lance: also referred to as a hot compressed air lance, a device that applies hot,
compressed air to both blow clean and to dry a crack.

Related demonstrations:

In the above video we are using our crack jet. This machine is like a jam jet on wheels.

Do the guidelines specify over, or under?

I've seen the paper, but my town uses sand. Nothing takes the fun out of a motorcycle ride like a tarry, sandy crack.
posted by ArgentCorvid at 5:48 PM on November 4, 2016 [6 favorites]

Ick, I hate it when sand gets in the crack.

It sounds better than my towns approach which usually is either
* do nothing
* drizzle tar all around the crack as if it'll magically hold it together like a bandaid

I see the problem; your personal number one seems to miss the target while a general membership voidance seems too drastic.

This really is papering over the cracks.

(Seriously, they need to resurface. This bodge is worthless.)
