Surprise, surprise, surprise!

Surprise Motherfucker is a catchphrase associated with James Doakes (played by Erik King), a recurring character from the Showtime television drama series Dexter. Celebrated for its overly confrontational attitude, image macros of Doakes featuring the phrase have been since used on imageboards and forums in response to someone else’s comment.

Episode 12 of season 7 was actually titled, "Surprise, Motherfucker".

Huh. Turns out I'm still mad about Doakes's fate, and thus, I suppose, Dexter's. I don't know why I was so very sure that the show would end with his being caught or killed, but I sure was.

I've seen this so many times I was surprised it was not a double. Or, as it would have been flagged by the mods, "Reprise, motherfucker."

The worst thing about Dexter's endgame was the fact that they could've easily gotten two full seasons out of a Dexter gets found out/goes on the run/goes to prison story arc before ending the thing with a bold final statement, but instead they thought it would be cooler to do what they did for the last four seasons: Let the air out of the balloon as slowly as possible, and with absolutely zero consequences for the main character. But the seeds for the show's deterioration were sown early; Killing off Doakes in S02 all but eliminated the tension of whether Dexter would get caught, and none of the other characters they put on his trail were even close to being as competent.

Dexter was such a missed opportunity as a TV show that it makes me angry, although it did make an excellent contrast to both the final season of Breaking Bad (the two shows literally aired their final episodes within a week of each other) and the three seasons of brilliant murder-husband insanity we got with Hannibal.

The only thing that even approached deft about the ending of Dexter was the cessation of his internal monotone, I mean monologue.

I only had heard this from the (occasionally ugh but mostly entertaining) "Overwatch WTF" compilation videos, which are really really funny if you play Overwatch and utter nonsense if you don't. I had no idea where it was from because my spouse and I gave up on Dexter after the first season because the acting was painful, the show was refusing to actually grapple with the idea of mental illness or being a serial killer in any interesting ways, and oh god the complete lack of anything like appropriate police operations anywhere. (My personal scream-and-fall-off-the-couch-in-despair moment was the first time they pan across the police station to where Dexter's bloodwork laboratory is, like, literally just through an archway in the frickin' lobby, and everyone just piles in casually like this is normal and no one has ever heard the words "sterile" or "contamination" in their lives.)

I'm pleased to know the source of one of his favorite add-on sound effects.
