The Junos

The Junos were last night in Newfoundland. Nickelback got Best Single, Best Rock Album and Best Group. Daniel Lanois was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.
I'm stuck in Ohio, did anyone see it? I would image The Barenaked Ladies made great hosts, am I right?
Full List Of Winners.

*Canadian crickets*

No but seriously. Any country that recognizes Daniel Lanois in a hall of fame is both so genius and so wack that it must be respected. Though their love of Rufus Wainright must be a Canadian self-hatred thing...

No Bruce Guthro!?

That Canadian Music Hall of Fame is pretty cool. Zal Yanovsky, yeah! Gil Evans! Uh, Dominic Troiano! (OK, you can't hit a home run every time.) But I think there's one person missing, the guy who, in fact, gave a young Daniel Lanois his first big break...I think you know who I'm talking about! RAFFI! Where's Raffi?

Oh, and...Oscar Peterson was Canadian?

I'm just happy Swollen Members won. Sometimes I really can't stand the bling blinging T-dot rappers like Choclair and BBSC. They're so full of themselves.

Raffi!! ahh yes. I grew up with crazy guy. anyway, how could they possibly forget about Destroyer? By far my favorite canadian band. One of my favorite bands regardless of origin, actually...

Ever since Triumph lost out to Chilliwack for best album, I have boycotted the Junos.

Seriously, that Remy Shand redeems everything bad I have ever said about Canada.

As a Vancouverite, I would just like to humbly apologize for foisting Nickelback on an unsuspecting public. I fought that decision all the way.

But many here felt they had to respond to Our Lady Peace and Jelleestone with our own bad bands. So we sent out Nickelback and Soul Decision.

Wow, Sloan got shut out... ah, well, Pretty Together was a rather weak offering from them anyway.

Perhaps they've had their day in the sun.... what do the Canadians on MeFi think about Sloan?

i'm a canadian, but haven't listened to the radio in 16 years or so, so don't know what's popular. however, daniel lanois is fantastic. i don't mind his production work (though i hate most of the people he produces), but his first two records (Acadie and For the Beauty of Wynona) are beautiful works.

As for Sloan, I'm neither here nor there on them. They have a few songs I think are excellent (Underwhelmed, Deeper Than Beauty) but mostly they don't grab me.

The Barenaked Ladies used to be one of the best live bands around (they may still be, I don't know). Long ago, before they ever had any records, they used to play Monday nights at Ultrasound. They were a hoot.

My current fave Canadian musicians are Geoff Berner, Danko Jones, Pony Da Look, The Deadly Snakes, (Herschel Savage and the) American Flag (their first record is one of the best of the 90s, in my opinion), Do Make Say Think, Godspeed! You Black Emperor, and the now defunct Shotmaker. [disclaimer: starting next week I'll be running the Danko Jones mailing list.]

The show was brilliant - fast paced, lots of performances (really live, too) and the BNL were perfect as hosts, with loads of improv song links and skits between presenters and acts. Puts the bloated Grammys to shame, actually. *ducks*

Neal Young is Canadian.

Yup, there he is in the Hall, big as life.

Kevin5: Chilliwack was a great band! The last of the hippie bands (until the next one). Do not mock them!! They had a long and storied history before they changed their name to Chilliwack. Real pioneers.
