The other day on the bus, my kiddo was being teased about her dark brown skin. it wasn't the first time and it won't be the last. this morning we did a little self-love exercise. i wrote some positive things on sticky notes and had her stick them to her mirror. BuzzFeed interview with Alexandra Elle.

This was very sweet and I am glad that it even inspired others to create art.

I had a lovely elderly patient who once told me about her many grandchildren, who have a spectrum of skin tones. She recounted that in the part of the country they lived in, one grandchild of hers was given a hard time for having darker skin. "But," she said, "I remind them that angels come in all colors."

What a lovely kiddo and a great mom!

Here is Jesse Jackson on Sesame Street, reciting William H. Borders Sr.'s poem:

I try not to repeat myself, but, speaking as a white person -- to paraphrase Bob Dylan, "our skin's not white...it's CHICKEN."

Nobody should have to feel "less than" because they don't have chicken-colored skin.
