Mutated frogs! Pesticide is being blamed for giving some frogs multiple sex organs-- sometimes even both male and female.

I know there's a clever joke in here, but I'm just too hung over to come up with it.

This was big news in Minnesota back around 1995... The MPCA has spent six years trying to solve it.

and the process of evolution is now accelerating at an exponential rate... Does this give any credit to the opinions expressed in Ray Kurzweil's Age of Spiritual Machines?

Poisoning wildlife isn't evolution. In fact this has nothing to do with genetics at all and in would counter any adaptabilty to one's environment argument simply by the fact that these hermaphrodites cannot reproduce or cannot reproduce as well. This is simply a chemical reaction in the frogs from the atrazine in their water. Sorry but Kurzweil et al are still sitting around waiting for the magic singularity.

Sounds like a frog in a creek bed is the new canary in a coalmine.

There's an excellent film on this situation which will be part of the Media That Matters on-line film festival.
