Make a game in 48 hours, by yourself, from scratch. Or as a team, in 72 hours. Ludum Dare 37 ran last weekend, on the theme of "One Room". Thousands participated, from seasoned developers to complete novices. Some common topics included Roombas (123456) and Donald Trump (123). See inside for recommendations...

(All games listed are playable in-browser.)

Alien Cats Need A Place to Chill Too Relaxed alien cat simulator.

Hoplitelite Roguelikelike with positional attack patterns, a simple clone of Hoplite.

Subway Taxi Drive a taxi, try to bring people to the subway rather than just running them over.

Rythm Rink Be a beautiful blue-ish ice skater!

Rot An interactive fiction piece about the transition from childhood to adulthood in a post-apocalyptic scenario. (TW: menstruation, blood, sexual abuse)

The Cold Cabin Beautiful game where you stomp around in the snow and find things.

Neon no Nakama Never has collecting glowing dots been so beautiful and oddly emotional.

Last Wights Help ghosts cross over with a sacred candle.

Max Press keys to move things on-screen and help Max get through each level.

Of course, this is only a somewhat random slice through the games on offer. The full list of all 2300+ games.

Occasionally, a Ludum Dare game ends up going pro, being turned into a more fully-fledged version of itself. This was the genesis of Mini Metro and Broforce, for example. The full list of Steam games based on Ludum Dare entries.

Want to try your hand at this game development thing? The next Ludum Dare will be in April 2017, but Global Game Jam will be in January - and there are always several jams going on over at itch.io. Don't know how to make a game? Sortingh.at has got you sorted!

Rock Paper Shotgun liked Nest, which is more of a gimmick than a game but is sort of clever and mind-bending.

Kitchen Wizard Pinball: a classic, physics-based pinball game centered around working in your kitchen to master the culinary arts. By my favourite twitch/youtuber Quill18.

Also, if any of you liked Dungeonmans, you might try the author's We Must Protect Lich House!

Hoplitelite Roguelike with positional attack patterns, a simple clone of Hoplite.

Suddenly I feel motivated to make my own Hoplike in PuzzleScript.

Ooh, I like "hoplike". So it's any turn-based single-unit tactics game based on attack/move patterns?

Hoplikes have a long history going back to at least 1976.
