Dick Latessa

Dick Latessa, Broadway star of Follies, Brighton Beach Memoirs, Hairspray and The Lyons, among many other productions, passed away at the age of 87. Latessa won the 2003 Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical.

Bless him, he was a gem. Hairspray was the first musical I ever saw on Broadway and he and Harvey Fierstein were magnificent in their roles as Mr. and Mrs. Turnblad. He was so gracious, too. I was just a kid when Hairspray premiered, but I remember he spent a lot of time after the show saying hello to everyone in the first three rows of the theater. It was a great indicator of his character and a huge treat for starstruck baby me. Thanks for that memory, Mr. Latessa!

I always say "I'm don't really consider myself a Broadway-loving gay except..." and his ibdb.com page is a possible continuation of that phrase.

I worked briefly with Dick on the revival of Cabaret at Studio 54, when he came in as a replacement for the role of Herr Schultz. He was every bit as warmhearted and outgoing in person as one would imagine from his equally moving performance. Bravo, Dick, break a leg, wherever you are.
