What is that horn? It's not a normal style french horn.

You're right, it looks more like a Flugelhorn than a French horn.

I was going to guess mellophone but I think Flugelhorn is right. It sounds pretty though.

I always wondered whatever happened to Chuck Mangione.

It's a beautiful piece of music to boot boat

Super bright colored clothes, music, canal. Throw in a bicycle and this would be the most Amsterdam thing ever.

Throw in a bicycle...

Actually I think Amsterdam is trying to cut down on that sort of thing!

oh wow... this was amazing!

It's definitely a Flugelhorn, which is in the trumpet family, like a bugle.

A french horn really, really, needs two hands. Which is also why you'll never see a french horn on a marching band field, they use mellophones to replace the middle brass sound. It'd be like trying to march around with a bassoon (or steer a boat, in this case).

I give it a 9. It's got a good boat and I can dance to it.

He does a duet with the carillon of the Westerkerk on Tuesdays.

It's a beautiful piece of music to boot ~boat~

Actually, Dutch for boat is "boot", pronounced the same with a long o.

I fully expect this man to be featured in Wes Anderson's next film.

Fun Flugel Fact: Although both trumpet and flugelhorn have the same pitch and fingerings, the flugelhorn is roughly speaking a soprano tuba (both are saxhorns) while the trumpet was developed from the much older bugle family.

I saw this guy on our honeymoon (has it been 10 years already?). He also plays the same instruments in a duet with the church bells from a nearby church, as Humbolt32 alluded to.

I feel my comment was particularly direct. ;-)

I saw Sijpkens from the window of Anne Frank's house. Peering out from the window with festive life going on outside brought home how difficult it must have been to be secluded but like me to peek out on the normal world. Also, in that I was visiting a dead friend's house for the first time with many other people doing the same thing, that he'd fuck off down the canal a ways.

Definitely a flugelhorn from the pitch. And beautiful playing too.

My husband and I saw him while we were on our honeymoon and we were doing a tour with Those Dam Boat Guys. The guy leading our tour told him it was our honeymoon, so he gave us a few options for music to hear, and I asked for Danse Macabre, by Camille Saint-Saens, which was delightful. He added some jazzy cornet over the music box toward the end, saluted us with his conch shell, and followed that with a song called Honeymoon in Spring (or something like that). It was exceedingly delightful.
