ah well. it was all downhill after "Sorry Ma, I Forgot to Take Out the Trash" anyhow. posted by zoopraxiscope at 10:46 AM on April 17, 2002
I was surprised when I heard Westerberg was putting an album out on Vagrant. Cool.
As for Axl Rose (whose name is an anagram for Oral Sex) being involved in this little spat, I'm surprised he's even around, I assumed he would have been dead or in jail by now. posted by insomnyuk at 11:12 AM on April 17, 2002
All Shook Down is a hugely underrated album.
Yeah, bring it. posted by lbergstr at 11:31 AM on April 17, 2002
So funny you should mention All shook down, lbergstr. I argued for a long time to my wife that that was Axl Rose singing backup on Someone Take the Wheel. I still think it's him, but I have moved on to other obsessions. posted by luser at 11:41 AM on April 17, 2002

I mean I used to like G&R too, but if this is true it's heartbreaking news... posted by jonmc at 11:54 AM on April 17, 2002
I never fell for the whole G n' R thing. When Axl sings he sounds like a fucking kazoo.
As for the Pistols, hopelessly old, fat, and anachronistic or not, I'll bet they still put on a good show. Sign me up.
They're too old to not play their songs now. Much better value for your money than in `78. posted by dong_resin at 12:11 PM on April 17, 2002

Hi, we're the Replacements, and we're playin' in a rock-n-roll band! posted by tommasz at 12:37 PM on April 17, 2002
So lbrgstr is the other guy that liked All Shook Down; I thought I was the only one. Tight tunes, clean production, Westerberg's greasy thumbprints all over that record. posted by Tacodog at 12:43 PM on April 17, 2002
Points to tommasz for a reference to the They Might Be Giants Song "We're the Replacements."
When I was like 9 years old I bought the They Might Be Giants "Don't Let's Start" three inch (!) CD EP with that song on it. I didn't realize they were singing about THE Replacements until years later (at which point I had been a Replacements fan for many years.)
Further Replacements-related weirdness: Tommy Stinson played bass on Puff Daddy's "All About the Benjamins" rock remix, and briefly appears in the music video. posted by bdk3clash at 1:27 PM on April 17, 2002
I like it too, Tacodog, but then I'd lisen to a record of any of the 'Mats breathing hard. posted by jonmc at 1:41 PM on April 17, 2002

Double bonus points.

Tacodog, lbrgstr and jonmc -- count me in on the All Shook Down love fest.
Grew up listening to the 'Mats. Can't imagine what my musical life would be like without them. Paul's solo stuff may not be quite the same as the old Replacements' material, but it sure isn't without its own merits. I think I feel a trip to Chicago's Virgin Megastore coming on. posted by aine42 at 1:55 PM on April 17, 2002

Tacodog, lbrgstr and aine42, where were you guys when I was in high school and everyone thought I was a weirdo for digging this stuff? posted by jonmc at 1:58 PM on April 17, 2002

heh, I grew up in Hawaii and spent my time trying not to get beat up by Samoans who liked "Jawaiian" music. As a short, skinny guy, this is not an easy task. posted by Tacodog at 2:30 PM on April 17, 2002
You're probably right, Settle. Oo! Story!
A few weeks ago I was djing a friend's party. I finish my set and go get a drink as the last record plays out. I overhear two disaffected partygoers (both in skinny pants, horn-rimmed glasses, vintage t-shirts):
A: Dude, this music sucks.
B: Yeah.
A: But it doesn't really suck. 'cuz that would be punk. posted by lbergstr at 3:29 PM on April 17, 2002
"Jawaiian Music", Tacodog?
Do you have a link for that? The name is just wierd enough to pique my curiosity. posted by jonmc at 3:38 PM on April 17, 2002

jonmc -- Can't speak for the others, but I was right here in the Midwest, getting my fill of this kind of music. Well, AND having everyone thinking I was a weirdo for listening to it. ("What? You like THAT better than Duran Duran??")
Huh. Suddenly I feel old. posted by aine42 at 3:54 PM on April 17, 2002
I *heart* the Replacements. I got to see them once, at the Ulster Performing Arts Center in NY, in 1989. My friends and I were waiting outside -- suddenly, the band came strolling on up from the bar across the street, cool as could be. I got to shake Tommy's hand before they went in and played a great set.

Does anybody know more about Paul Westerberg's Grandpa Boy project? I saw this article at Flak Magazine, but upon going to the label's site, couldn't figure out how to order the darn thing.
There are three extremely 'Mats-esque tracks available for download in .MP3.
