We can't necessarily blame 2016

The Beeb examines whether there were more celebrity deaths in 2016 than usual. And the conclusion: " ... we're now half a century on from the flourishing of both TV and pop culture in the 1960s, which massively expanded the overall pool of public figures." The good news is that within a few years, I won't have a clue who the celebs are.

The Beeb is working to reduce this problem in the future by only using 10 actors and 10 comedians over and over for every possible show going forward.

This is an interesting way of measuring the quantities - using only pre-prepared obituaries as the unit of measurement (and as a relatively unemotional measure of celebrity/significance).
