I think audiences of the time may have needed a reminder that something this weird was supposed to be funny, and that their TV was not broken.

I watched this more than once as a kid. A few years ago I looked it up to see if I could find anything about it online and there was practically nothing. The only thing I really remember is the scene where Thomas finally gets his long-requested promotion from the role of "rocket boy" only to learn that the next step up is "rocket lad".

Those days of independent tv stations were glorious. You'd get dubbed anime, strange syndicated shows, and stuff like "Rocket Boy."
