He deliberately drove into the crowd

Three people have died, including one young child, and at least 15 others have been injured when a man drove at speed through pedestrians in Melbourne's busy Bourke Street Mall. The driver was stopped by police, who rammed the car and fired shots. The police say the incident was not an act of terror.

The driver was involved in a stabbing in the southeastern suburb of Windsor earlier today. He later took a woman hostage and headed across the Bolte Bridge, where she was able to escape.

Five people, including a three month old baby, are in critical condition at several Melbourne hospitals. Live updates.

This post was deleted for the following reason: Hey, this is terribly upsetting news but I'm not sure it's an ideal basis for a post, at least at this time. "Breaking news" sort of posts don't really always work that well here to begin with -- let's at least wait until there's a bit more clarity as to what happened. -- goodnewsfortheinsane
