Could the dog that went after the bear cubs possibly have thought that through? Good Dog.

Hah!
Spent 10 years in the Yukon, many of them in Faro.
Never met Kel Sax, would have been before my time there, but the territory is replete with characters like her.
Thanks for this.

Hey, those are on my list of required items EVERYWHERE, not just in AK.

Virga, having failed to scare or divert the bear, ran straight at the cubs where they sat in the willows. That got the bear’s attention, and pulled her off Kel and back to her offspring.

Nothing surprises me about dogs, but that's some amazing instinctive pack strategy.

This article is packed with quotable lines. :)

I am still wondering how the whole "I was sleeping naked in trees with a bottle of whiskey and a shotgun" thing relates to NOT wanting to learn first aid...

I think her intent was to point out that she was not necessarily making the best, or at least not the most forward-thinking choices at that point in her life.

Now maybe I'm overreading but given the context I'm not sure this is actually a banal, threadshitting comment. The article is about an (admittedly awesome sounding) woman who works in the mining and extractive industry, which has historically been a major polluter of waterways. The NoDAPL movement has focused heavily on the threat the pipeline poses to their water supply. The slogan "Water is Life" is used as is the term "Water Protectors". So yeah, Kel Sax is an interesting person, but let's not glorify the mining industry and ignore the threat it poses if left to it's own devices.
