Last year, we asked the question "What ever happened to Richard Simmons?" Now, one of Richard's friends tries to answer that question. Missing Richard Simmons, a new podcast from Dan Taberski.

Poor Richard. Can't he just be left alone? I would imagine that after so many years in the public eye it becomes tiresome.

This podcast has been blowing up this past week. I can't help but think that the guy is having some health problems or some other reason to retire from public life. Is it really appropriate to make a Serial like podcast about it?

listening to the podcast, I do get the sense that the creator is legitimately concerned about his friend*.

I've also really come to admire Richard Simmons.

*and yet he's also commoditizing it, which is weird

Perhaps he's gained weight and would prefer the public not know, especially if he thinks it will hurt sales of his merchandise?

Perhaps he lost both legs in a freak trampoline accident and would prefer the public don't know because it would hurt his shorty short sales?

Honestly though, any idle speculation is just that. Why guess when we have absolutely no evidence to base it on? Seems cruel.

I listened to the first episode of this and based on the previous post and thread about this, it just seems like he opted out of being a public persona. And so what?

If he had been abducted by some cult or svengali intent on isolating him and suctioning off his wealth, fine. But it doesn't seem as though that's happened. As one of the people previewed at the end of episode 1 said, "He doesn't owe people shit."

Sometimes people get tired.

Richard Simmons has brought so much joy to my life. As a cis-gendered white male baby-boomer who has never struggled with weight, (although maybe I should start...) I'm not his target demographic, but the hope, enthusiasm and acceptance he projects publicly has always been an inspiration to me. He's one of the few celebrities I follow on Facebook, and he never fails to bring a smile to my face. The man has done so much for so many for so long we should just leave him the fuck alone already.

I don't like this post. It exploits this man in an icky way.
