Building hyperrealistic sculptures of insects that don’t exist

"Japanese artist Hiroshi Shinno builds hyperrealistic sculptures of insects that don’t exist." Via Colossal: "...perfect forms of imaginative species that look as if they were built from vibrant leaves and delicate flower petals. Even this aspect of the creatures are false, as each leaf or petal was cast from resin and painted with acrylic paint before being placed on the model’s brass base.

"In addition to building these fantastical works, Shinno also sketches the initial ideas for his imaginative creatures in an Insect Diary on his website. You can see more of the Kyoto-born artist’s insect-based sculptures and 3D work on his Tumblr."

I keep oscillating between enchantment and wanting to go buy a flamethrower that also sprays poison.

Yeah, I am afraid of many of these.

Dang, these are gorgeous. And the varied bright colors sort of scream "excellent video game design" to me, like these could easily be units in some sort of tactical insect/plant strategy game.

Neat! These are amazing. I'm endlessly jealous of the people who have the time, skill, craft, and dedication to build such things.

If you're interested in models of insects that DO exist, let me recommend the work of Julia Stoess.

Weta needs to hire this guy for a live-action version of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.

And if you tell me that no one is making a live-action version of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, I'm going to tell you that they damn well should do.

These are gorgeous and marvels of rare craft and imagination and totally utterly look like the movie creature that unfurls a proboscus that implants something in the pretty girl who's a little too curious for her own good in that enchanting forest
