Kept you waiting, huh?

Drew Scanlon is more than just a pretty face perpetually blinking in surprise at you. He has just cashed in his meme money to launch a new solo project called Cloth Map, a travel documentary series.

Drew Scanlon is an amateur pilot, former cohost of the Alt-F1 podcast and former member of the gaming enthusiast group Giant Bomb, whose most notable achievements have been travelogues from North Korea (the video discussing his trip is behind a paywall), E3, and Iceland as well as playing the 100+ hour Metal Gear Solid franchise with professional idiot Dan Rykert.

I've been an avid Giant Bomb fan for about as long as Drew was with them. He was definitely one of my favorite guys on the site. He got me into F1 and I had the pleasure of meeting him in Austin for an Alt+F1 meetup at the Austin F1 Grand Prix. I can't wait to see what Cloth Map turns into and I'll definitely be supporting his Patreon.

I thought that was Tom Brady.

TIL that that wasn't Cary Elwes I was seeing.

Drew is handsomer than both Tom Brady and Cary Elwes, it's true. Even handsomer in person.

Big fan of Drew's, very excited for this. The Patreon model isn't my favorite, but at this point I guess I don't know what the plausible alternatives would be.

Based on the logo, I was thinking it was a PAX-related project ... maybe that's not the case? I would be glad if that wasn't the case.

I don't think it's PAX-related at all, just a similarity in logo.

I watched his livestream where he announced it. Nothing to do with PAX.

I was gutted when Austin left Giant Bomb, and gutted again when Drew left. I think they both leant a lot of really interesting viewpoints and had a lot of knowledge not shared by other GB crew. It's great to see them both doing exciting new projects though.

I would imagine watching Danny O'Dwyer jump ship and get over 20k a month from his Patreon was pretty tempting. He's got the skills and I look forward to seeing what he produces.

Don't yet support anyone on Patreon or Twitch. I have a feeling that it could get out of hand pretty quickly if I started.

I will miss Drew on the Bombcast. He didn't talk much on it (and probably even less when they went live with video), but he definitely had some of the best jokes and a different view of games than the rest of the guys.

Obviously I don't know how they feel about it, but it feels like they would need to hire for two roles now. On camera personality + video production master. He will be hard to replace. And no one has brought this up here yet (except in terms of viewpoints/knowledge), but Giant Bomb is in need of a more diverse staff.

I'm going to miss Alt +F1, hopefully they work on something else together.

Alt+F1 will continue, he's said. On the launch stream he was thinking about new names.

I like Drew but isn't this basically the same as posting an active Kickstarter?

Unclear on the rules of Patreon posting here since they never actually end.

Jeff Gerstmann's talked about it a few times and they're very much looking for someone with skills on both sides of a camera, which sounds to me like a tall order. I agree that Giant Bomb could use more diversity, both in kinds of games they talk about and viewpoints. Waypoint has been a huge breath of fresh air in that regard, Austin was great at GB and he's been fantastic at bringing together a diverse crew.

I was a little worried about posting this now, since it's essentially just a patreon page for now, but Drew is such a great guy that I want people to know about what he's done in the past and what he hopes to do in the future. I'm pretty sure I found out about GB via Metafilter, glad there's a lot of love here for duders and former duders alike.

The greatest endorsement I can give Drew is that I listen to and enjoy Alt-F1 despite the fact that I would rather chew glass than watch Formula 1.

This is been a week of reminders that many "gaming influencers" are nasty little fascists. So I hope GB West gets some exciting new staff soon. I need to have a video home to go back to where people are mature and likeable.

Having Jeff on the Beastcast was a little depressing this week as I feel like that podcast is vastly better than the regular bombcast now and I was reminded that Jeff G actually laughs occasionally. Here's hoping he gets some people to talk to soon.

I believe Jeff said on Jartime that they were looking to hire 2 new staff (they never got around to replacing Austin).

Vinny and Jeff is such a great combination and it is a shame we don't get it that often any more.

Nifty. Waypoint has been putting out great stuff and I've sorted drifted my idle game news/previews over thataway. Do'D's noclip is pretty swell. Giant Bomb's crew does seem depleted, but my irregular tune-ins have all been randomly enjoyable. Looking forward to what the format affords Scanlon.

I believe at this point they're looking for 3 new positions. Another video producer for East because they've needed another one there from the start. An editor out West to replace Dan after he went East to replace Austin. And now another video producer position for West.

Based on Jeff's tweets and tumblr, it's a very slow process not helped by CBSi bureaucracy. I don't think they've actually posted the opening for West's video producer yet.

He's already over $10,000 on Patreon. This is gonna be good.
