Subway dogs of New York, and their obedient and caring human carriers

"Dear USA Today, Can I Travel With a Small Dog in the New York Subway?" "Yes. Transporting a lap-sized pup on the subway is allowed with proper containment." "OK, but whose lap, and what counts as proper containment?" (Urban Dog NYC has more practical tips, but less doggo photos.)

I don't have a dog or a subway, but when my ex-wife and I would go for walks, we had a cat that loved walks but hated walking, so she would just perch the little heathen in the bib of her shortalls.

It's serious.

The Shiba in the big canvas tote. So alert. So ready for whatever comes next.

The beagle in a tote bag totally looks like K9.

The TTC in Toronto allows dogs in off-peak hours that are leashed as per the city's usual bylaws. One rider has taught her dog to duck and cover to avoid getting stepped on. Video.

Yeah, in Toronto I took my dog everywhere on the TTC; then I moved to Montreal where they must be in a closed carrier (no dogs in bags here), so now my pup can't go anywhere unless we rent a car or take a taxi.

I've seen so many thousands (millions?) of dog pictures that I've become numb. #beagleinabag ended the stupor.

I wish I could contact the dog owner and suggest a Halloween costume: that dog + that bag are a perfect fit for the Doctor's K9. Just need some electric wheels and silver-ish side panels with blinken lights.

Linus would stay in a tote bag for approximately 3 seconds before he'd jump out to explore. : )

I know, right? At first, I thought it was just a plastic bag, but on re-review, I noticed that the handles were cloth, so it's something a bit more serious than poking four holes in a plastic bag and calling it a dog carrier.

It's an Ikea bag.

#9 looks like an Ikea shopping bag modded for canine carrying purposes

"Carrying" purposes.

I'm hoping that "giant dogs in a bag" is a fully intended side effect of the MTA by-law, designed to make New York subways more adorable.

In Boston, you only have to ensure your pet is restrained. That includes snakes.

I would do this with a Great Dane if I had to, but I'd draw the line at toting a Tibetan Mastiff.

Every time I'm on the subway and someone gets on with a dog in a bag I actually spend the whole time hoping that they sit next to me so I can make friends with the puppy

one time a woman with a dachshund actually really did sit next to me and I held out my hand to say hi and it sniffed my hand a couple times and then gave it a teeeny tiny little lick and it was the best thing ever

I absolutely want to see a huge body builder type do this with a hockey duffle bag and a large malamute.

Doggos are of course allowed on the London Underground and they don't need a bag, and on the Amsterdam Metro, and on London Buses. But they mostly prefer going by bike.

The "Catching the M-Train" one is annoying because that is clearly an A platform.

It's adorable as long as the dogs are adorable. When it is a barking and fighty dog with shirtless yobbo owners drinking their morning beers sitting immediately behind you and your visiting elderly parents it was a little more England than I wanted to show them.
