"A young man in a dark suit opens the front gate. We walk along the edge of an expansive green lawn. Two statues of black butlers dressed in bright green and holding lanterns flank the front door."

Where I'm from (the deep South) we call those lawn jockeys - you can buy them at flea markets all over the south and they are often painted in "black face" - they are a subdued rascist symbol which dots many a trailor's front yard and porch.

A buddy of mine had the stones to not only be the first black family moving in to his new, all-white upper class neighborhood (here in South Florida), but also to put a pink-skinned lawn jockey on the lawn.
Nobody said anything, despite the utter forbiddance of lawn ornaments.
Still makes me laugh.

Le Pen is only as horrible as the French are narrow-minded and incapable of accepting their status as a has been culture.

How many of us have actually read his speeches? This guy is being "borked" by the left. I'm a Jew, and his thoughts as expressed in this article don't bother me at all. In fact, I agree with most of the things he says. Look how the commentators invariably attach the label "rightwing extemist" to his name. When was the last time they put "far left socialist" in front of Jospin's name?

I wonder how many of the French marching against him this week were calling for the destruction of Israel and giving tacit approval to attacks on Jews a couple weeks back? and they say the U.S. is a racist culture? gimme a break.

[off topic]What's burning your croissant, Paris? This is not the first time you've attacked all of France based on the behavior of one (or, to extrapolate, the behavior of about 20% of the French electorate).

The French are far from narrow-minded and love the banter of debate as much as wine and cigarettes.[/off topic]

[sort-of-back-on-topic]If you truly believe that France is a "has been culture" then maybe you should read Le Pen more closely and support ce con.

What I detected while living there is that, as a culture, the French are "morality/ethics challenged." I suspect this situation is rooted in France's bad experience with Catholicism. But I'm still working on the theory.

(Also, while I was there, I was almost extradicted for having inadequate health insurance, but I assure you this has nothing to do with it.)

My theory is that they killed off their best and brightest during the French Revolution and now the dregs of the gene pool remain. The French are genetically challenged.

Much as I love to slag off the French, it's ridiculous to say theirs is a "has been" culture. As long as there are a people that call themselves French, then their culture will be relevant to them. Mind you, they've rested on their laurels cuisine-wise for far too long.

Well, I'm still waiting to see rest stops along Interstate 95 selling crêpes and horse burgers.

Just kidding.
