Where I'm from (the deep South) we call those lawn jockeys - you can buy them at flea markets all over the south and they are often painted in "black face" - they are a subdued rascist symbol which dots many a trailor's front yard and porch.

A buddy of mine had the stones to not only be the first black family moving in to his new, all-white upper class neighborhood (here in South Florida), but also to put a pink-skinned lawn jockey on the lawn. Nobody said anything, despite the utter forbiddance of lawn ornaments. Still makes me laugh.

How many of us have actually read his speeches? This guy is being "borked" by the left. I'm a Jew, and his thoughts as expressed in this article don't bother me at all. In fact, I agree with most of the things he says. Look how the commentators invariably attach the label "rightwing extemist" to his name. When was the last time they put "far left socialist" in front of Jospin's name?

What I detected while living there is that, as a culture, the French are "morality/ethics challenged." I suspect this situation is rooted in France's bad experience with Catholicism. But I'm still working on the theory. (Also, while I was there, I was almost extradicted for having inadequate health insurance, but I assure you this has nothing to do with it.)

Much as I love to slag off the French, it's ridiculous to say theirs is a "has been" culture. As long as there are a people that call themselves French, then their culture will be relevant to them. Mind you, they've rested on their laurels cuisine-wise for far too long.
